San Antonio was founded in 1718 by Spanish explorer Martín de Alarcón, establishing Mission San Antonio de Valero (the Alamo) and Presidio San Antonio de Béxar to secure Spanish territory near San Pedro Springs. It was named in 1691 for St. Anthony of Padua and became Texas's first chartered civil settlement in 1731 with the arrival of Canary Islanders.
