Villa Finale Museum & Gardens hosted “Whoopie Ti Yi Yo!”, a Celebration of Villa Finale Under the Texas Stars, inspired by the art of Mary Bonner. The western themed celebration honored Chris Carson, FAIA, 2019 recipient of the Walter Nold Mathis Preservation Award. Guests dined on upscale Texas cuisine food stations by Don Strange of Texas and musical entertainment was provided by The Rick Cavender Band.
Villa Finale was the last home of local preservationist, Walter Nold Mathis who was instrumental in the revitalization of the historic King William neighborhood. In addition to his preservation work, Walter Mathis was also a prodigious collector of fine and decorative art. These collections fill Mathis’ “Villa Finale,” so named in honor of it being his last home. Today, visitors to Villa Finale can view Mathis’ collection of over 12,000 items in the unique setting of this finely restored 1876 Italianate home. Mathis, who bequeathed the property and its collections to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2004, wanted to leave this gift for visitors to enjoy for generations to come.

Honoring the Past & Celebrating the Future

The SA Cancer Council celebrated its 35th anniversary during its signature Spring Luncheon.
This year’s theme was “Honoring the Past & Celebrating the Future.” Thirty two past presidents were recognized for building a culture of philanthropy that exists today. James B. Milliken, chancellor of the University of Texas System, along with his wife, Nana G.H. Smith, the First Lady, The University of Texas System, were the guest speakers. They were interviewed during a Q-and-A session by Dr. William Henrich, president of UT Health San Antonio.
A group of pioneering women joined forces in 1984 to establish a nonprofit now known as the SA Cancer Council dedicated to supporting the former Cancer Therapy & Research Center; they had one goal in mind: Make a difference in the fight against cancer. To date, the SA Cancer Council, an all-volunteer organization, has raised more than $5 million.
Over the past 35 years, the community’s monetary support of the cancer council’s fundraising efforts has been used for the following: $750,000 to establish the CTRC Council Patient Education Suite; $600,000 to support the Patient Supportive Care Fund at the Mays Cancer Center; $275,000 to support cancer research grants at the Mays Cancer Center; and $150,000 to support pilot research projects at the Mays Cancer Center, among other important projects.

Runway is a signature San Antonio Food Bank event featuring gourmet food and wine tastings, a designer runway fashion show and boutique shopping. This year, four designers Hahn Merriman, Georgine, Project Runway’s Mondo Guerra and Augusto Manzaneres showcased their fashions to the crowd of 450 guests. A pre-event was sponsored by Marcus Sloan at Sloan/Hall and featured a sneak peak of upcoming fashions along with snacks and beverages.
Upon arrival, guests were greeted with champagne as they walked the red carpet into the Food Bank. Celebrity Judges Tawana Timberlake, Michael Quintanilla, Siobhain Buckley and Ursula Pari selected a “best dressed” attendee and the winner sashayed down the runway.
For every $1.00 donated, the SA Food Bank is able to provide 7 meals to individuals in need. The San Antonio Food Bank’s mission is to fight hunger in Southwest Texas through food distribution, programs, education and advocacy.

Wild for Wishes

Rebecca’s Wish is a 501 © (3) launched by Rebecca, who is now a 16-year-old high school sophomore living in San Antonio. Rebecca founded this nonprofit in 2018 as a resul of her chronic pancreatitis and related complications.
Rebecca is one of the few children in the world now living without a pancreas. Rebecca’s body started shutting down almost a decade ago because of an unknown autoimmune disease that eventually attacked her pancreas. She suffered for years in agonizing pain until receiving a lifesaving surgery which removed her pancreas. Every day, she is still fighting fo her life, As opposed to wallowing in self-pity, Rebecca decided to fight for the thousands and thousands of children diagnosed annually with pediatric pancreatitis, a disease for which there is no known cure.
When the Make-A-Wish Foundation heard about Rebecca and approached her to make her dreams come true, Rebecca sidestepped the ordinary and shot for the extraordinary. She asked for a medical philanthropist to help her start a non-profit, so that she could help children just like herself, suffering from this tortuous disease.
Rebecca’s 2nd Annual Gala, Wild for Wishes, took place at the San Antonio Zoo and included generous culinary donors DUNKIN’ Bowl & Barrel, My Chef Meals, Two Bros. BBQ Market, The Rustic, Papa Johns, Snowflake Donuts, and Scooters who passed out samples and when not snacking, guests could pet the snakes (OH HECK NO) ride the Merry Go Round, bid the silent auction, and danced the night away with the Klocks! Thank you Rebecca for your CAN DO attitude and all the supporters for helping to make Rebecca’s Wish come true!
