Your competitor isn't outranking you. They're getting recommended. That's a completely different game, and most local businesses don't know it changed.

Ranking = you showed up in a list.
Getting recommended = Google's AI answer or ChatGPT names you directly, before any list shows up.

You can be the #1 link on the page and still lose, because the answer box at the top already handed the customer one or two names and they never scrolled to you.

Why does AI recommend one business over another? It's not random. It pulls from what it keeps seeing: your reviews, your Google profile, mentions of you around the web, content that answers real questions people ask.
