David L Yang Build a Video Team That Delivers Without You

When in doubt about your video pipeline…
Look upstream.

“They just don’t get it.”

I hear this a lot from people building video teams in-house or trying to get their team to take on more of the process.

They can shoot.
They can edit.

But somehow you, or one of your A-players, still has to jump back in and help.

A lot of the time, it’s not because they can’t do the job.

They’re missing the context.

If you want someone else to take over more of the video process, you have to transfer enough of the thinking that happens before the video gets made.

The setup is part of the process too.

Not everyone wants to hustle, not everyone wants to just lay back and relax. That’s okay, and you just have to know who you’re trying to attract and work with on your video team.

Not everyone will agree with you, and you need to know that that’s okay. That doesn’t mean you can’t find people that share your work ethics and will play ball with you inside the video process.

Whether it’s building a video team, designing a strategy, or hiring the right team…

Every decision leads to a trade off.
Rewards and consequences.

I swear usually when forest fires happen at night it’s beautiful but deadly.

The creative inside: “I wonder if I can light my next fire scene like this?”

I guess you can try to figure it out yourself or get some insights if it’s any use.

I’m doing a monthly Open Q&A if anyone’s interested to hop in to walkthrough their video ops with me. We can talk about team structure, ownership delegation, hiring, delivery, geek out over lighting honestly whatever’s on your mind in terms of video inside your biz.

When you speak to a fellow video production company owner, it’s kind of inevitable that you would talk about things outside of business operations so sorry if we’re not giving operator skills in this one we’re just geeking out over lighting.

If you’re running video in house, if you have a dedicated editor, if you’re running personal brand for your founder.

Bring your editor in earlier in the process. If they don’t even know what you do and talk about in a high level how do you expect anyone to actually be creative when they need a dictionary just to figure out what you’re doing.

Something I don’t see a lot of founders do when they have an editor in-house is to have them show up earlier in the process to actually digest and understand what everything is about before going into the edit.

Especially if you’re running a business with a media team and you’re not actively involving your creatives into the process and they are just as clueless as what you’re talking about as a random audience then, of course your messaging is never gonna come across and their energy is spent mostly just trying to figure out what you’re saying.

I didn’t get the Cooke Speed Panchros very sad about that part but I did get to play with the Varo Panchro.

It’s been interesting switching hats between filmmaking and consulting businesses on video but I do enjoy both of them so we’ll see how this goes.
