I never imagined having this much fun making a living.

Underground utility construction isn't exactly one of the more glamorous industries on the planet. But this hashtag + hashtag refresh was one of the most fulfilling projects I've ever worked on.

Out in the field.
Boots on the ground.
And I loved every sweaty minute of it.

A.M. Ortega Construction has been Southern California's leading underground utility contractor since 1974, quietly keeping the region's infrastructure running. The brand needed to reflect that legacy while attracting the caliber of clients and talent their reputation had earned.

The goal was clear: look like the premium operation they already were.

So we went all in.

Full brand immersion, web design, copywriting, programming, photography, and by request, drone footage of their highly prized vacuum trucks. Getting up close to the sheer scale of what they build underground every day, was incentive to bring everything we had.

We know full well that a stunning website is only as good as what it produces, so we built every page with lead generation baked in... clear calls to action, intuitive navigation, and content structured to convert.

The results speak for themselves: +2,400 leads in 12 months and +600 visitors a month consistently flowing through a site that works around the clock, anchored by a visual system that feels as engineered as the infrastructure Ortega installs.

Once upon a time, a few weeks ago, I was ghosted. 😱 Texting, emailing, even an in-person, friendly, meet-up with key decision makers. An RFP was completed and sent out. We received very positive feedback followed by a few inquiries, then p**f. 💨 Gone. No reply. No explanation. Just… silence....

I grew up surrounded by sisters who were basically the foot soldiers of the women’s movement in the ‘70s. They wore mens Levis' (ewe), listened to Joni Mitchell ❤️, and zero razors allowed (no comment/emoji).

Not being capable of doing what boys did?

That concept never really landed.

My parents didn’t feed me the “you can’t do that, you’re a girl” line. Neither did my brothers. So, I never internalized it I guess. I just assumed I could do whatever I wanted and that kind of blind confidence carried me along.

Whether it was chasing boys on the playground, starting rock bands in high school, or later, partnering with them in business, I just felt like we balanced each other out. I wasn’t trying to break barriers because I didn't know they existed.

It just felt like we were better together.

It wasn’t until later in life that I realized not every woman got that kind of launchpad, and not every room was welcoming.

On Friday, sitting in a ballroom of very welcoming, smart, accomplished women at Heart to Heart, Women in Leadership Luncheon (WILL), I had one of those “look how far we’ve come” moments.

I heard women at my table whispering about needing to leave early for school pick-ups.

That’s the real juggle.

Running businesses. Raising kids. Studying for that next certification. Taking care of extended family. Trying to show up to Kindergarten graduations and the client meeting without forgetting who you’re supposed to show up as. 😜

Know what I mean? It’s exhausting. But it’s also exhilarating.

Resilience isn’t a buzzword on a coffee mug. It’s the real deal. Especially for single moms or solo entrepreneurs who keep it going with duct tape and caffeine. I would know.

Some days, it was pure chaos and guilt was the reigning emotion. Other days, it was pure joy. And through it all, I learned that having both a business and a family wasn't a trade-off. It’s a combustion engine that fuels the other.

The simultaneous combo taught me to listen slowly, foster stellar time management skills, treat employees (my kids) with utter respect, sacrifice for the greater good, show up with humility, humor, and no excuses.

This years WILL was a solid reminder that success for women isn’t just defined by spreadsheets and sales charts, but also by the impact we leave behind.

Here’s to all the women and men doing the dance — the insane pace, late-night creators, who show up messy, a little blurry eyed, brilliant, and relentless.
