A young Nepali girl awaits treatment at Shukraraaj Tropical & Infectious Disease Hospital in Kathmandu. She had to walk to the hospital from her village. Access to healthcare is limited in resource-poor nations such as Nepal and the population is at greater risk from infectious diseases such as dengue. Vaccines are the most economical way to prevent disease and with over 1.2 billion people at risk to dengue worldwide the work has never been more important.

Climate change has led to the emergence of dengue fever in the Kathmandu Valley. The disease had previously only been found in the lowlands of Nepal. This change places a large population with no prior exposure or immunity at great risk.

These strips and the ELISA kits had to be temperature controlled. We managed to transport them with us from San Diego > San Francisco > Hong Kong > Singapore > Nepal. Through good luck and some quick thinking all of the supplies brought made it successfully to Nepal.

Transportation takes many forms in Kathmandu but motorcycles reign supreme. The flow of traffic is a controlled chaos and the constant use of the horn is not in anger but to alert others of your intentions. Sometimes getting out of the cab to walk is your best bet.
