One Minute Marketing #3

Continuity Makes the Difference

You're the master of social media...understand direct mail...and think you're a creative genius. But do you really know how to create a cogent and consistent marketing campaign?

The key is to have thematic and graphic continuity in all your various media and messages, so that you create a cumulative effect, where your messages gain power and effectiveness by complementing each other.

If you have different looks and divergent messages in all your media, you are pulling your audience in different directions and confusing them.
Develop continuity for the most efficient and cost-effective marketing effort.

One Minute Marketing #2

Your website — the new business card

As the saying goes, you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

In business today, your website serves the function of the old business card, establishing your identity in someone’s mind.

Your website should establish in very few words who you are and what you do. (See “Who Are You?” below). You can also make a statement about your style — conservative…funky…old school…rebellious — with the artistic approach to your logo and website design.

One quick tip: Don’t try and tell your whole life story on the home page. Your website should be like any other marketing message…it should make one strong and provocative point and make the reader want to talk to you to learn more.

You can go into details in other sections, but leave the initial contact page clean and clear.

And be sure to coordinate the message and style of your printed business card with your website.

Who Are You?

One of the first steps in marketing your business is establishing exactly who you are. What service or product do you provide? How would it benefit a potential consumer? What do you offer that others don’t? Why are you better than the competition?
One way of doing this is to create a “positioning statement.” You see these everywhere. Companies often run them with their logo. This statement is a definition
of who you are and what you do in as few words as possible.
Start by writing a paragraph about your company/service…outlining what you do and why it’s valuable. When you’re done and satisfied, cut the length in half.
When it’s half as long as the original, polish it up and repeat the process, cutting it in half once again.
Keep doing this until you come up with a brief statement that distills your original thoughts into a direct and succinct statement.
When you know who you are…then you’re ready to start telling others.
