My second mandala, “Binge-watching” ended up being a text piece, to my surprise. I’ve watched so much TV in my life. It’s always been my number one cultural go to, guilty pleasure, sometimes obsession—I used to read the TV listings with a fine tooth comb when I was a kid. There’s always a push and pull with TV: people sometimes think of it as the junk food of culture, but it can also tell amazing stories that make people feel connected, or less alone, or expose them to new ideas. I made this piece in concentric circles, the red going from the outside in, listing episode titles of very bingeable shows. The gray text going from the inside out comes from the book Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman, about the ways that TV has changed the ways we understand the world and relate to each other. While writing these tiny words and thinking about Postman’s warnings, two things felt true at the same time—that tv culture, advertising, fast edits, and jarring juxtapositions have changed our brains forever and also that television has given us some of those most beautiful art and storytelling that humanity has ever made.
