This spring we launched a new website for Riverside Technology, inc.! Riverside fulfills US government contracts in the science and technology industry, researching data and solutions related to weather, climate, marine life, and more. They are a wonderful team and this new site shows off their professional and approachable style and their areas of expertise.

🎙I was recently on the podcast.

Women in WP is a bi-monthly podcast about women who blog, design, develop, and market in the WordPress community. Angela Bowmen, one of the podcast hosts, traveled to WordCamp US and interviewed several women including myself. I spoke about how I came to use WordPress over 15 years ago and became involved in the community. It was a humid and rainy day in San Diego but a great time to be at the conference and I’m grateful for the opportunity.

🐘 Just launched: SEZARC.org

SEZARC, the South-East Zoo Alliance for Reproduction & Conservation, is a group of dedicated scientists in Florida working to save rare and endangered species.

SEZARC was in need of modernizing their legacy website and updating content and photography that had not been touched in years. We started from scratch and provided a clean, sophisticated website experience that reflects their important work in conservation and will make their members proud. We also provided extensive training to SEZARC staff on how to keep the content up to date and looking sharp.

Work included:

🦘Website Hosting and Maintenance

SEZARC assists their member zoos and aquariums by helping species such as the endangered Florida Panther to successfully reproduce. SEZARC works with an array of wildlife including rhinos, zebras, cheetahs, sharks, rays, and even coral. I really enjoyed learning more about their work through this project.

🌴Let’s recap WordCamp US!

I recently returned from San Diego where I got to attend my biggest WordCamp yet - . This was an impactful weekend full of sessions on website accessibility, growing your audience, and what’s new in WordPress. And just as important, WCUS is all about meeting people (in person!) and being part of a supportive WordPress community.

This time around I got to meet some very special people, appear on a podcast, and enjoy some of the sights of San Diego.

👋 Hi there! It’s been a long while, and I’d like to reintroduce myself.

I’m Lydia, a WordPress web designer, developer, and consultant. 💻

WordPress means a lot to me, both as the tool I use to build websites and the community that supports it. I’ve built my career on helping businesses and organizations thrive online, and I do my best work for them when I’m building custom WordPress websites. 🪄

My business, Lydia Roberts Design, is about to turn 8 years old in October. 🎉
I started the biz in Asheville, NC where I was an organizer of for many years. 🌴 I am based in Las Vegas, and I work with clients all over the country and beyond. A favorite part of my job is the creative problem solving that comes with the territory of building and maintaining websites in an ever-evolving online landscape.

▶️ It’s always fun to return to a brand I know and love! My friends over at .me recently launched an online course and I made this fun graphic to help promote the class.

I’ve worked with .littlefield of We and Me for many years - from building the We website and creating a style guide, to making landing pages, graphics, and fine tuning Mailchimp automations.
This time I helped guide him through the online course process from choosing a platform (we went with LearnDash) and launching the course. A lot goes into an online course and it’s handy to have someone in your corner who knows the technical side as well as the “gotchas,” so I was happy to help in this venture!

🖤It’s World Okapi Day! I’ve been fascinated by the Okapi since I saw one at the San Diego Zoo more than a decade ago. When building the White Oak Wildlife website, I was able to learn more about them and I hope you enjoy them, too. Here are a few Okapi facts:

⚠️Okapi are endangered. They live only in the rainforests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and their habitat is under threat.
🦒Although mistaken for a Zebra relative, Okapi are actually relatives of the giraffe.
🤍The beautiful striped pattern of the Okapi helps them blend into the light and shadow of the forest and may also help calves follow their mother.

😬Oops. We all make mistakes from time to time with our online accounts, from paying for services we don’t need to letting our credit cards on file expire. These can lead to big problems like losing a crucial domain name! 😱

Here are the most common mistakes I’ve seen with domains and domain name services. Each one should take only a few minutes to fix. 👍

1. Forgetting to renew your domain name
2. Expired credit card
3. Paying for domains and services you don’t need
4. Linking to the insecure version of your domain
5. Using a domain email as your login email address
6. Not using a password manager

🔥A little Friday fun, sharing some photos from a summer visit of Valley of Fire state park here in Nevada. This is one of me and husband’s favorite places to hike and take friends and family. The pink and red sandstone against the blazing blue sky is always stunning. The temperatures really soar in the summer so best to bring tons of water and keep the hike short this time of year!
