A culture of reading is built through pages, people, and possibility—families fueling curiosity, educators expanding imagination, and communities championing every child. 👪🏻📚🏫

That commitment came alive at Barnes & Noble Clackamas Town Center during PR From The Heart’s Building A Culture Of Reading In Your Classroom 2026—a landmark literacy celebration presented with SMART Reading. 🌹📖🎉

Co-moderated by John Masiulionis and David Newell—the beloved Mr. McFeely on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood—this panel brought together six of the brightest lights in the world of children’s literature: Tony Buttino, Emmy Award-Winning Co-Creator of Reading Rainbow; ; 12-Year-Old ; and award-winning educators and authors Dr. Julie McDonnell, Julia Kolouch, and Dr. Eileen Sherman.

Together, they explore how families and educators can help children want to read, why different formats and styles help every child connect with books, what becomes possible when young readers see their cultures, families, and experiences reflected in stories, how books can open conversations about grief, loss, and belonging, and how literacy empowers children to find their voices. 🎤

At the beginning of a new school year, messages encouraging students to “be kind” can be found on classroom walls, hallway bulletin boards, and backpacks across the country. 🚌🫶🎒

But kindness is more than a message children read... 📖

It is revealed in the moment a student notices someone sitting alone at lunch, standing on the outside at recess, or entering a classroom where everyone else appears to have already found their place. The question is not simply whether children understand what kindness means—but whether they possess the empathy and courage to act when belonging hangs in the balance. 🫱🏽‍🫲🏻

And so, one veteran Iowa educator is challenging families to move beyond telling children to “be kind” and begin showing them what inclusion looks like in action—because creating a classroom where everyone belongs often begins with one child choosing to see beyond a first impression. 🏫🫂👪🏻

The fact that you were born on September 11 has always carried such profound meaning. On a date forever marked by unimaginable loss and remembrance, your life offers quiet proof that love can still enter the world, light can still find us, and hope can begin again. ❤️‍🩹

Twenty-five years ago, children across America watched the adults around them struggle to put the unthinkable into words. Some witnessed the attacks of September 11 unfold on classroom televisions.
