We are thrilled to announce that the San Diego City Council recently approved the University Community Plan Update and the Hillcrest Focused Plan Amendment to the Uptown Community Plan.

In addition to our involvement in the Hillcrest Focused Plan Amendment, the MIG team in San Diego was the prime consultant of the University Community Plan Update led by Rick Barrett, MIG Principal, and Steven Davidovas, Project Manager, with partners City Thinkers and Keyser Marston Associates.

The plans guide how county land will be used for future homes and jobs while addressing the need to preserve and celebrate natural, historic and cultural resources. You can read more about our work at https://www.planuniversity.org/

As Park and Recreation Month comes to a close, we're proud to highlight MIG's work on the Parks and Green Stormwater Infrastructure initiative with City Parks Alliance, US Water Alliance, Green Infrastructure Leadership Exchange and RWJF.

This initiative is bringing a cohort of parks and water agency professionals from eight cities across the US (Atlanta, Boston, Houston, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Raleigh, Seattle and Tucson) to learn about how to increase green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) in parks. Together, we're pushing for systems change in the field to promote resilience, equity and community health because:

🌱 There’s strong and growing interest in integrating GSI into parks

🌱 Investing in GSI in parks creates healthy, resilient communities and saves money over time

🌱 Planning and budgeting for maintenance is crucial

🌱 GSI installation/maintenance creates green jobs

🌱 There is a need for better solutions for greening without gentrification

Stay tuned for more on our Parks and GSI work—including webinars, tools, and peer learning opportunities—in the year ahead!

We are proud to announce that Project Clean Water won an Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo) in their Civic Education & Public Information category.

Our dedicated San Diego team has been providing branding and marketing services to PCW since March 2021. Starting with a behavior change marketing campaign addressing stormwater issues in San Diego County—52 Ways to Love Your Water—our team has successfully initiated multiple educational campaigns to encourage residents to keep their communities free of pollutants through small, everyday sustainable practices.

Design professionals have become “greener” in the past few decades. But that’s not enough. We need to radically reshape how we practice.

MIG's Jennifer Zell, Director of Regenerative Design, outlines how regenerative design can shape a more positive future. Check it out on our website! https://bit.ly/465dPUE

Parks serve as a vital third place for people to come together and unwind, contributing to the overall well-being of the community.

MIG's Seattle team has recently overseen the completion of significant renovations at the Sunset Beach area in Lake Sammamish State Park, located in Issaquah, WA, to improve access and recreational amenities in the park while meeting regulatory requirements and improving ecological conditions.

Our MIG team worked with the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission to develop concepts and then construction documents for adding picnic shelters, accessible routes and picnic spaces, electrical and utility upgrades, the framework for a new play area, and native plantings at the Sunset Beach recreation area. Our team also addressed drainage and stormwater quality and helped obtain permits for improving the area within wetland, shoreline and stream buffers and FEMA flood zones.

Join us in celebrating another huge milestone for the City of Bakersfield!

Over the past years, the City has been developing a new Recreation & Parks Master Plan, as an update to their 2007 version. This new Master Plan is a blueprint to guide park and recreation system management and improvements over the next 10 years.

Aligned to new changes, investments, and growth occurring in the City, the Plan integrates extensive community outreach, a complete inventory and condition assessment, needs analysis, and funding strategies, as well as a related Tree Plan, Kern River Parkway Management Plan, and MLK Park Master Plan. Great news for the City!

Today we celebrate International Day of Play!

For the last 40+ years, we have seen firsthand how essential play is for building confidence, fostering resilience, and supporting human development. When it comes to play spaces, our goal has always been to create rich, fun-filled environments where people of all ages, abilities, and life experiences feel empowered and connected. Since 1996, communities within the Upper Chehalis Basin have experienced four catastrophic flood events. MIG led the development of a comprehensive approach to minimize flood damage to these vulnerable communities through a series of site-specific strategies. Known as LAND—The Local Actions Non-Dam Alternative—this project is focused on short-, medium- and long-term community-based solutions as an alternative approach to the currently proposed flood retention dam on the upper Chehalis River.

The MIG-led process was based on community input and generating consensus, resulting in the LAND Alternative Plan. Throughout the process, the project team managed and facilitated the LAND Steering Group, including representatives from local governments, the Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis Reservation, the Quinault Nation, and stakeholders.

Currently, MIG is collaborating with the Chehalis Basin Board and the Office of Chehalis Basin to develop implementation strategies, including identifying how LAND is incorporated into the broader Chehalis Basin Strategy. Learn more at https://www.chehalisbasinland.com/

The best way to design for a community is to invite them into the planning process.

When we partnered with the Marine Discovery Center in Port Angeles, WA, on their new public aquarium and science center, our task was to provide conceptual and pre-design services for the 20,000-square-foot center to create a space that inspires.

As part of this process, MIG carefully curated the visitor experience to ensure the elements of the design successfully met the goals of the client and community. To do this, MIG facilitated design workshops and community meetings to understand the importance of this project to stakeholders and the Port Angeles community. The team also met with several Tribal Nations to learn about their history and how their tribes use water and the ocean.
