Martinelli Environmental Graphics was proof to team up with Hood Design, DeSilva Gates, and SFTIDA to bring together this exhibit honoring the sailors from the Port Chicago Disaster.

Here is a short synopsis:

What happened 80 years ago - a horrible explosion occurred in the Bay Area--at Port Chicago near Suisun Bay where munitions were being loaded onto ships bound for the Pacific during WWII. Only black sailors were given the dangerous job of loading munitions and they were untrained. They came to fight on the front lines but discovered – due to segregation, they would not be allowed to fight for the U.S. nor share quarters with white sailors. They were given a task for which they were not trained.
The explosion killed 320 sailors and civilians, and injured about 400 others. The vast majority of the dead were African American sailors. When the sailors were ordered to resume loading munitions, 258 refused for safety reasons. They were threatened at gunpoint. 50 continued to refuse to return to work. They were charged with mutiny and tried at Treasure Island and convicted to hard labor in federal prison for up to 15 years. Recently all were exonerated by the U.S. Secretary of the Navy, saying they did not receive a fair trial.
