Most people do Facebook ads completely wrong. Turning ads off too early. If you're split testing new ads vs your current ads in the same ad set, wait at least 7-10 days before turning ads that don't spend.

Proof that cheaper subscribers are (almost) always more expensive.

We track the cost per opener, cost per clicker, and cost per purchase when running Facebook ads for newsletters:

Here's what we're seeing.
1. IOS subscribers are more valuable but more expensive.

2. Ads that sell the newsletter's core value can be 2x more expensive but also 3x+ more valuable for you.

In practice, this is not always doable to run this set up for bootstrapped startup newsletters. It's nice when you have cash and can wait for long-term bets to pay off. But with bootstrapped products we often have to focus on maximizing that 30-day cac payback.

Sparkloop, beehiiv, selling leads, cpc ads, and low ticket offers have been incredibly helpful but nothing beats those sweet CPM-based or brand ads big newsletters can snag.

We did a test targeting male audience and found that an image with a guy showing emotion worked significantly better compared to an image with a guy without any emotion.

Also, another iteration of that test showed that no person in the image is even better.

It's a newsletter ad.
