Studio Hinrichs

Studio Hinrichs Studio Hinrichs creates design work ranging from branding to publications to museum exhibitions. It communicates rather than decorates.

Studio Hinrichs engages in all types of design projects, including corporate communications, brand identity, promotion, publishing (books and magazines), packaging, interactive and environmental systems. Over the course of his 45 years in design, Kit has won hundreds of national and international awards for his work and has been the creative force behind several of the most successful and most rec

ognized graphic and brand identities known today. The work on this website represents a sampling of projects that Kit directed over the years as well as his latest projects produced under Studio Hinrichs. Whether the end purpose is a logo, packaging, marketing program, environmental wayfinding system, promotion piece, consumer magazine or a book, we believe that the most effective design has a narrative thread. It promotes understanding of a subject or philosophy. It makes the complex simple; the opaque, transparent; the unstructured, concrete; the obtuse, accessible; the ordinary, beautiful, and, ultimately, the message memorable. Narrative design is a way to help our clients tell the story of who they are and what they value and do so in a way that holds the viewers’ interest and makes them care.

As a graphic designer we have our hero’s. One of mine has been W.A, Dwiggins. Often called the father of graphic design in America. Five years ago Letterform Archive produced a beautiful book of his work, lavishly illustrated with the best of Dwiggins’ work. I purchased a copy then and now find that there is a reprint, for about half of the original price as an early bird price, plus a couple of added bonuses. If you don’t have the first edition, this is an opportunity to get in on this Kickstarter reprint. It’s a great addition to your design archives.

Last Friday was the opening of the newest exhibition at the Museum of Craft and Design, “Neon as Soulcraft”. It was an enthusiastic crowd filled with Artist, donors and members of the Neon design community. The show was curated by Kelsey Issel and Meryl Pataky of She Bends. Our studio was fortunate to have the opportunity to design the exhibition, together with the great team at the museum lead by curator Ariel Zaccheo. This was the first exhibit with MCD’s new Executive director, Nora Atkinson. A great event and show. Please drop by it’s worth the trip.

Last week at Letterform Archive, Craig Frazier gave a witty, heartfelt and thoroughly enjoyable presentation of his life in design and illustration in San Francisco and an introduction and signing of his latest book, “Drawn." He drew a crowd of a over a hundred friends, colleagues, students and clients.

The afterparty at Piccino’s, in the Dogpatch neighborhood, was equally entertaining. Craig, his wife Suzanne, John Mattos, Michael Schwab, and my wife Linda had a wonderful wrap-up to the event. Good food, good times, good friends!

Last weekend, Linda and I saw a magical exhibition at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco titled “Japanese Prints in Transition: From the Floating World to the Modern World.” It includes Hokusai’s “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji” and, it seemed, hundreds of other original prints by Japanese masters. A stunning show! It gave me new appreciation of Japan’s unique print culture and woodblock prints as a powerful and exquisite art form.

So, if you are in the City by the Bay, it’s a great way to spend a day staying out of the fog. Enjoy!

On Saturday was a bittersweet event where the of Craft and Design’s Executive Director and Founder JoAnn Edwards was feted at an elegant event in San Francisco. The crowd of hundreds of friends, designers, artists and colleagues sent her off with warm wishes for the next chapter of her illustrious life. She was gifted a stunning necklace by Kat Cole in appreciation of her service to the museum and the San Francisco artistic community.

We’ve had the pleasure of working with JoAnn and her staff for the past decade designing exhibitions, museum catalogs and special promotions. We appreciate the time we worked with her and got to know her, and we wish her well in her next great adventure.

Tempus fugit—or “time flies”—when you’re doing what you love.

Last year, we produced the 22nd edition of 365 Typography calendar, and your support made it our most successful release to date.

Here at the studio, work is well underway on the 2025 edition. This upcoming edition features 10 designers and 12 typefaces that are new to us and hopefully, new to you as well!

Stay tuned for more news and updates on next year’s edition.

We’re excited to continue our long-time collaboration with the Museum of Craft and Design. This time, we’re working with Curatorial Director Ariel Zaccheo to design the upcoming Indie Folk and Mr. Roboto exhibitions.

Indie Folk is an exhibition showcasing the Pacific Northwest and its unique ecosystem of craft traditions, pre-industrial cultures, and Indigenous and settler histories. The works on view are handmade and include everything from woven baskets to tooled-wood objects, quilts, paintings, and more. A selection of Indie Folk music will also play throughout the gallery.

Indie Folk: New Art and Sounds from the Pacific Northwest opens to the public on Saturday, February 24. We hope to see you there!

Last Thursday, I had the privilege of presenting to a full house at ArtCenter’s South Campus gallery. I was floored by the attendance, especially for an afternoon presentation. Sean Adams and his team were gracious hosts as was Karen Hofmann, ArtCenter College of Design’s president.

One of the highlights of the day was having the opportunity to meet with a few of the ArtCenter scholarship students that Linda and I have supported over the past few years. A very rewarding experience.

The afternoon was capped off with a book signing of “Narrative Design: A 50 Year Perspective.”

I’m grateful to have collaborated with so many talented individuals over the years, illustrators, photographers, designers, and writers, that have contributed to the creation of the book’s visual content. It is an honor for me to continue to have the opportunity to contribute to our shared visual culture.

ArtCenter community, thank you for inviting and welcoming me! It was truly a pleasure.

Our collaboration with the Museum of Craft and Design continues with the design of the marquee wall and promotional videos for their recent exhibition, “Designing Peace” (a collaboration with Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum).

The “Designing Peace” marquee wall featured the work of origami artist Linda Mihara of Paper Tree. The unique talents of Rob Villanueva RVSF, our creative partner, brought our design concept to life with videos capturing her art.

The exhibition, designed by Jensen Architects in collaboration with MCD’s Executive Director JoAnn Edwards and curator Ariel Zaccheo, seem even more timely and relevant than ever. It will be up until Feburary 4, 2024 and is worth a special visit.

What a great showing at our book signing at the Archive last week! It was wonderful to see friends, colleagues, and clients from Jonson, Pedersen, Hinrichs, and Shakery, Pentagram Design, and Studio Hinrichs, some of whom were so gracious as to visit from out of state.

We’re so grateful to Rob and Priscilla at the Letterform Archive for organizing the event.

Southern California friends, we are planning a presentation and signing in Los Angeles at my alma mater, ArtCenter College of Design, on January 25, 2024. Stay tuned for more details!

The Designers for Peace exhibition makes another stop, this time in San Marcos, CA! Brought to life through a collaboration between Graphis and Kit Hinrichs of Studio Hinrichs, this exhibition stands as a united global response to the Ukrainian invasion. It exemplifies the power of visual art to inspire, unite, and ignite a call for peace.

If you are near CSUSM, please join us for the reception 6–8 pm TONIGHT (you must RSVP at bit.ly/Fall2023ContextEvent). Light refreshments will be served. Event details and parking instructions will be emailed prior to the event.
