Rest in Peace and Harmony, David Bowie.
You always were my guy, from the days when I was a kid when I would hear the first notes of Let’s Dance starting on the radio and get so excited. You kept being beautiful and you never seemed afraid. Something about you was so full of empathy. You showed us a blueprint for living an artistic life. You kept going. You kept pushing. And labels meant nothing to you! You showed me from a very young age that I could be myself. Look like whatever -wear crazy makeup! dress like a lady, man, an alien! - who even cares -- JUST GO FOR IT! DO what you want! Then dance it out! Sing about it!
You showed me that even the coolest, most clever and awesome ones among us feel like outcasts a lot of the time, and for me that’s the best gift I think you could have given. And if YOU felt left out sometimes, well I don’t feel so bad about it when I do. And you told me to get in there and dance and just tear up whatever beat I want to, when I want to, and hey! Put some bad-ass shoes on in the process -- and I did, and I still do, and love you for instilling that in me. And I send you my love and heartfelt appreciation wherever you are right now, Major Tom, and I am always going to be grateful to you because you really helped me. You with your exuberant Let’s Dance and the Talking Heads terrifying me with their Burning Down the House video and now only one of my Davids is left. I will look up into the stars from now on and have to assume you are there watching down on us. I hope you find what you’re looking for.
