It’s time to dig deep ⤵️

It should go without saying that audience targeting is one of the most important aspects of an ad strategy ⭐️

You can have…

💥 great creatives
✍️ stellar messaging
🆎 thorough split testing strategies

BUT if your audience targeting strategy is just “spray and pray” 🙏🏻

It literally ALL goes to waste 🚮

Luckily, curating your audience targeting strategy is really not all that difficult 💁🏻‍♀️

It just takes some preparation 🌿

1️⃣ Define your audience avatar(s):

This needs to go way way beyond Age, Gender, and Location of your target audience. You need to take it a step further: Explore their Interests, Behaviors, Beliefs, and Values, too!

This last one is uber-essential for purpose-driven businesses. You want to know what they believe in, what they dream of, what their fears are, and what motivates them to make decisions. This all plays a part in how you sell your product or service.

2️⃣ Leverage Meta’s detailed demographics:

In recent years, Meta has reduced its number of categories and interests available for audience targeting, but it’s still the most robust of any ad platform! So use it!!

You might be surprised at how specific you can get, what categories are available to reflect this persona you’ve created, and what kinds of leads this pulls into your funnel!

3️⃣ Use First-Party Data:

Last but certainly not least, first-party data, the most powerful tool in your arsenal.

Creating custom audiences and lookalike audiences of your current followers, website traffic, email subscribers, and users who’ve engaged with your content will be so essential for pulling in warm leads to retarget them and new leads that look like them.

I know this is a TON of info I’m throwing at you, but I think you’ll find it useful for when you’re getting started with your ads. 😊

The NUMBER ONE ☝️ mistake I see business owners making is boosting organic posts ⬆️

While it can feel like boosted posts are an easy way to dip your toes in the meta ads ecosystem… 👞

What you’re really doing is throwing away money 💸💸💸

Here’s how you can use your successful organic content for ads that work 🪡

(You can do this from your phone or desktop but for ease of use let’s look at how to do this on your phone)

Step 1: download the ads manager app, log in, and click the round green plus button in the top right corner to create a new ad

Step 2: set your marketing objective to post engagement

Step 3: select one of your published posts from Facebook or Instagram that has a lot of likes, comments, saves or shares. You can edit the text if you like.

Step 4: click the black arrow in the top right to go to the next page. Create your audience. You can also include people who’ve engaged with your page or posts or people who’ve visited your website.

Step 5: click the black arrow again to go go campaign budget and schedule. Here you can go as little as $5/ day (don’t select a lifetime budget) and have it start sometime at the beginning of the week early in the morning for your desired geographic region

That’s it! There’s a few more options you can choose from on desktop but the process on the mobile ads manager is just as good. 🙌

This shouldn’t be controversial but it is… 😬

Lately, my feed has been flooded with ads from agencies making HUGE promises they can’t possibly deliver on 🚨

It’s almost always something along the lines of:

“We’ll deliver you ###X leads a day for only $X amount per day/month”

While there are certainly you could achieve this with ads, do you think those leads they’re bringing in are of high quality?

If you don’t know the answer, it’s no…

This is what I always tell prospective clients when they ask me,

“What kinds of results can you deliver?”

Well, I can deliver a lot but…

I make ZERO guarantees 🫥

This is because I don’t own Facebook (as much as I wish I did lol) 🙅🏻‍♀️

And I can’t magically control the ads to make them work perfectly 🪄

I can only use what I’m given and, honestly, a lot of it depends on you…

Your business plan
Your budget
Your offer
Your patience

What I CAN and DO promise is that I will work my hardest for you and use 100% white hat (good guy) strategies to incrementally build up a suite of campaigns that deliver on your business needs 🌿

But these things take time ⏰

And for business owners in a hurry, this can be frustrating and disappointing 🙁

I can completely understand the desire for immediate results, but I don’t want to lie to you like a lot of these agencies do…

Ads aren’t magic and neither am I ✨

So if you’re looking for a miracle, you’ll need to start praying because no one can make something out of nothing. Especially when it comes to ads!

I hope this comes across like more of a PSA than a lecture 😅 because this truly is coming from a place of genuine care and concern for my fellow business owners. 💚

Once you start to deep dive into setting up your ads account, you'll quickly learn that the process isn't as simple as Meta's information resources make it out to be... 🫥⁠

Further to that, your google'ing may sometimes leave you even MORE confused as the Meta ads ecosystem changes constantly and even looks different for some users 😵‍💫⁠

Ad metrics can be confusing 🫠 but they don’t have to be! Save this for later and comment 🦜 if you got the bonus ;)⁠

During my onboarding process, I give all of my clients a cheat sheet so they know exactly how to read my weekly ad reports and do their own reporting if we part ways.⁠

I WANT my clients to understand their own campaigns and not feel like they have to rely on my word alone to know how well their campaign is doing.⁠

By having the tools to understand their metrics better, I find that my clients are more at ease knowing they can ask questions when they see a change in cost per lead or click-thru rates.⁠

In this post, I lay out a few of what I consider to be the most important metrics.⁠

Just knowing the basics of these numbers can get you started with what to fix in your own campaigns if you’re DIY-ing.⁠

Sometimes, troubleshooting a campaign requires more nuance and that’s when you call in the big guns, such as an ad manager like myself 😊)⁠

But can you start to do it on your own with this info? Absolutely! ⁠
