I suffered my first engine failure in a single engine plane at age 18. I KNOW it can happen to me.

A friend in data security told me over lunch that he doesn't do preventative engagements. I was surprised, but his answer made sense. Turns out, most business leaders really DON'T think it can happen to them.

This is from my personal profile, but it applies to what we see at work as well.

We're dealing with clients that are all overloaded or struggling with organizational "ADHD" and this analytical degradation in our collective ability is a big reason.

OneDrive... Is it a sync app or cloud storage? Or just another Microsoft brand with an identity crisis?

Not surprisingly, even some sophisticated clients get confused by this. We hear this frequently: "My coworker over there is using OneDrive, not SharePoint." But... the OneDrive app in your system tray syncs to SharePoint too.

We refer to that little cloud in the system tray as the sync app named OneDrive. That alleviates a lot of confusion during onboarding! Now they can focus on the difference between SharePoint and OneDrive file storage as opposed to learning another Microsoft ambiguous branding lesson. Azure, you're next!

Ever wondered why it's so hard to get your team to simply focus and solve a problem?

Why can't even smart people just think ahead, analyze the variables, take responsibility without re-delegating?

Let's think about this - If employees answer 30 messages per day, are they more proactive problem solvers? What about 60? At what point to they only respond instead of create and solve?

I dug way too deep down into the weeds on a project that wouldn’t move the needle. Or so I thought.

You’re never supposed to do that as a business leader.

Take a look at some pictures of what I did in this latest planecast.

In the video, it appears that I took on this project for all the right reasons to teach myself a critical lesson. And that's partially true.

But I went in with many bad assumptions, such as the weeds were thicker than I thought and my preparation was inadequate.

However, in the end, a project borne out of impatience taught me the opposite.

Pilots lose control and crash airplane without ever moving their controls all the way in order to recover. Looking at accident data, we see it happen, over and over.

In a similar manner, l lost control of my business. Take a look.

Learning to fly without an instructor might be dumber than running a business without one, but it's not as different as you think.

When I started AP Logic, why didn’t I get help earlier? Turns out there are some good reasons…but that decision still cost me.

We're not tracking you, they said! …It's anonymous, they said!

So, how does "anonymous" become "not as private as you thought"?

This has nothing to do with data breaches or theft. I'm talking about how easy it is to figure out who and where you are, even as data is anonymized.

There’s NO question that this is THE single biggest scoping mistake we see startups making during initial app design.

While this holds especially true for companies starting on a smaller friends & family budget, even companies that are much farther along tend to simply let their eyes get bigger than their stomach.
