Supporting “NEXT GENS!”

Ethan is a self-motivated filmmaker based in England, who is passionate to tell stories that have shed light on unspoken topics such as neurodiversity. Ethan was raised in Manchester and he spends a lot of time between there and London where he studies Digital Film Production at Ravensbourne (recently graduated). Ethan's main passions as a filmmaker are in editing, directing and script development. He has a great love for Sci-Fi, Fantasy & Drama. Ethan has a great attention to detail in his work that he uses to improve consistency and tone within his editing, research, and script-based work. So far, his experience with Next Gen has been eye opening as he has learned more about the pre-production process in filmmaking. This position has provided him with opportunities to use his own initiative within tasks in a flexible working environment. He has been fascinated to see how much the project has developed over the last year and beyond. He has found it refreshing to have the opportunity to be a part of a project based in the US and his experience as a Research Director has opened a few doors into finding a gateway in the industry.

Many people know of the Nine Sisters, ancient volcanic mountains that formed over 20 million years ago. These morros extend over 40 miles in a straight path from San Luis Obispo to the coast of Morro Bay. While the world at large knows this phenomenon as the Nine Sisters, here in SLO we often point out the Seven Sisters due to both Chumash and Hollister Peak being on private property and are otherwise inaccessible.

The name Seven Sisters comes from the morros that are open to the public and that are often used both for hikes and when we seek to find ourselves in nature. Within sacred geometry, the number seven represents purity and spirit. Under that oneness it seems serendipitous that we can find peace in our spirit while exploring the purity nature has to offer.

The Seven Sisters consist of Morro Rock, Black Hill, Cerro Cabrillo, Cerro Romauldo, Bishop Peak, Cerro San Luis, and Islay Hill. The Sisters stand as well-known aspect of SLO county’s outdoor community and is a staple of hiking enthusiasts along the coast.

San Luis Obispo is a sacred place though, more than just trails, these landmarks are sacred to the central coast and to the Northern Chumash Tribe in particular. The Nine Sisters hold a power with nature, even its sacred geometry stands out as noteworthy. Nine represents perfection, balance, and order and is a number considered to be the Supreme Superlative as it is thrice sacred, a trinity multiplied by a trinity. Those who visit its hills and walk its paths should remember to respect our relationship to the land, as it provides for us, we too should treat it with the reverence deserved of such a special place on Earth.

Supporting The NEXT GEN!

Brendan Byrne is a freelance documentary and commercial filmmaker based in Venice, CA, who has specific interests in socio-environmental topics. Growing up in San Luis Obispo, CA, Brendan found a passion early for the outdoors, which inspired his studies at the University of California Santa Barbara where he studied Film & Media Studies and Geography. The intersection of the two studies inspires him to explore how a sense of place can impact the formation of identity, and how that in turn can impact the environment. As an aspiring filmmaker Brendan had limited exposure to the dominant Los Angeles film industry, it’s equipment, trends and network, but hopes to give other local, up-and-coming visual storytellers the first step in bridging that gap.

Those local to San Luis Obispo might know, Morro Rock was named in 1542 by Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. However, what you may not know is that another special rock in Morro Bay marks the original and first landing of Filipinos to America. They arrived on Oct. 18th 1587, 45 years after Morro Rock was named and 33 years before the Pilgrims landed in the east. They met the indigenous tribes in the area and offered them food and clothing as peace offerings. The Filipinos that landed on Morro Bay were shiphands to a Spanish sailor by the name of Pedro De Unamuno, on the ship known as Nuestra Senora de Buena Esperanza, “Our Lady of Good Hope.”
