While some of us will celebrate the Spring Equinox with a breath of fresh air and a smile, Iranian people will vibrantly welcome in the Persian New Year, or Nowruz. Nowruz, meaning “new day” in PersianNowruz begins at the exact moment when this link opens in a new tab the sun crosses the equator during the vernal equinox. When this happens, Iranian families gather around the haft-seen, an altar where seven important items are on display —
Seeb (apple), representing beauty
Seer (garlic), representing good health
Serkeh (vinegar), representing patience
Sonbol (hyacinth), representing spring
Samanu (sweet pudding), representing fertility
