Screen printing isn’t always as simple as loading a shirt and pulling a squeegee.

Some garments—especially polyester and performance fabrics—can cause dye migration, where the fabric dye bleeds into the ink and changes the final color. That’s why this print required a barrier gray underbase, followed by a flash, and then 2 layers of gold ink to achieve a vibrant, accurate finish.

Could we have skipped those extra steps? Sure. But the result wouldn’t have met our standards.

At Koala Tees, we believe quality is in the details. We take the time to choose the right inks, adjust our print process, and add the extra passes when a job calls for it. While some shops may cut corners to save time or lower costs, we’d rather produce a print that still looks great long after it’s been worn and washed.

When you’re comparing screen printing prices, remember you’re not always comparing the same process. Experience, attention to detail, speed, and doing the job right the first time are what separate an average print from an exceptional one.

From our shop to the big stage. 🎭✨

We recently had the opportunity to print apparel for THE HIVE DANCE CO , producing these designs using CMYK only DTG (Direct-to-Garment) printing for an ultra-soft feel with no heavy ink buildup.

Because these garments were printed on natural-tone shirts rather than bright white apparel, we also adjusted and optimized the artwork files to ensure the colors reproduced accurately and maintained the intended look once printed. Small file adjustments like these can make a big difference in the final result.

A little behind-the-scenes look at what goes into producing great prints. 🎨👕

A customer recently sent us artwork that wasn’t quite production-ready, so we professionally vector traced the design and cleaned it up before printing.

One thing many people don’t realize is that automatic vector tracing isn’t perfect. Gradients often don’t convert correctly, small details can be lost, curves can become rough, and unwanted artifacts or errors can appear throughout the artwork. In this case, we had to go through the design by hand, correcting those issues and rebuilding portions of the artwork to ensure everything printed cleanly.

Taking the extra time to properly prepare artwork helps create sharper prints, smoother lines, cleaner color separations, and a better-looking finished product.

It’s one of those details most customers never see—but it’s often the difference between an average print and a great one.

Just wrapped up these full-color DTG shirts for a customer heading to an event in Nevada.

DTG is one of those processes that really shines when a design has a lot of colors, gradients, and small details. No color limitations, no compromises—just print the artwork as it was designed.

It’s always cool seeing projects leave the shop and knowing they’ll be worn at events, conferences, fundraisers, and gatherings all over the country.

Throwing it back to 1994. ⚾🐝

We recently came across one of the 16,000 pennant flags that Koala Tees screen printed for the Salt Lake Buzz—long before they became the Salt Lake Bees.

What makes this project even more memorable? It was a rush order that our team completed over a single weekend.

One of the coolest parts about being in business for over 40 years is looking back at projects like this and remembering the teams, businesses, schools, and organizations we’ve had the privilege of working with throughout Utah.

From printing 16,000 Salt Lake Buzz pennants in the 90s to producing custom t-shirts, screen printing, and embroidery for local businesses today, it’s been an incredible journey.
