tell beautiful stories and cultivate strong bra I love juggling multiple endeavors at once!

Design is the best way I’ve found to make a positive impact in the world. I first got hooked while cofounding Dorm Mania, a waste-reduction program at the College of William & Mary. I served as the Creative Director, designing our identity and presence on campus from the ground up, and learning about branding on the way. I moved to Philadelphia to become an in-house designer with a national networ

k of nonprofits. There, I worked on newsletters, annual reports, flyers, posters, and other publications every day. I began freelancing in early 2017 because I wanted to work with more diverse clients on more varied projects. If you know someone who needs a designer's touch, please send them my way!

Here’s a behind-the-scenes photo of me photographing a family at Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum… and the resulting photo! The boy is feeding a piece of seaweed to a snail in one of the Museum’s touch pools. Many thanks to Tenji Aquarium Design + Build for hiring me for this job!

Earlier this year, I traveled to Florida to photograph Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum. While there, I went behind the scenes to photograph evidence of the famous plumbing expertise that my client, Tenji Aquarium Design + Build, is known for! I think you have to be a genius to design whatever all this is. Many thanks to Carly at Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum for putting up with my incessant requests to move stuff around in order to get these shots.

Earlier this year, I traveled to Florida to photograph Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum for Tenji Aquarium Design + Build. Here are some detail shots: exhibits, art, bas reliefs, custom sconces, touch pools… it’s a pretty cool space.

Earlier this year, I traveled to Florida to photograph Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum. More specifically, I was there to capture the “Living Gallery” that Tenji Aquarium Design + Build created to connect Shell Museum visitors with the animals that produce the objects they so adore. It was pretty impressive how Tenji had transformed the previously-unused first floor/basement into a glowing aquarium full of mollusks. Here are some of my shots of their work!

Every year, I design the launch book for Tribe 12’s fellowship program. And every year, it’s so fun to see all the great projects, businesses, and non-profits that their Fellows have been working on! Here’s an excerpt from last year’s all-virtual edition. Applications for their 2022 Fellowship cohort open in three weeks—if you’re Jew-ish and have an idea for a venture, get in touch with them to learn more!

Last year, I designed a logo for the Africa Peacebuilding Institute. 2020 was their 20th anniversary, but due to the pandemic they were unable to celebrate it as originally planned. So this year, they came back to me for a 20+1 anniversary logo to use for 2021 and I was happy to create this fun little modification for them!

In 2020, hired me to design a new logo for them. Earlier this year, they came back to me for a custom alteration to that logo to use for their campaign. Proclaiming “Heroes Work Here,” my design became a postcard, a yard sign, and a social media image that asserts the importance of parks and recreation to the physical and mental health of Philadelphians—especially those who are underserved. For a final pop of spicy color, we switched out the brown background for a cayenne-to-saffron gradient and added a thin teal border as a nod to the owner’s previous business. With the tagline version and tagline-free version, the logo was complete! Congratulations on your new logo, Philadelphia Spice Company!

For this round, we moved the star anise out of the center of the logo and locked it up with the name against a heavier background. My primary goal was to find the right balance and arrangement of words and icon. I also presented a few coloration variants.

Now we’re getting to the refinement stage of my . There are usually several quick back-and-forths with the client during this step.

First, I provided some different options, from simple to more complex, for incorporating the star anise shape. We were also still working on nailing down the best typeface, and we finally found it in the bottom right option.

Getting close!

Next in my , I explore the concept the client chose to move forward with and try to find a better solution by adding, subtracting, and modifying various elements.

It turned out that adding more spices did enhance the mandala effect (not to be confused with the Mandela Effect haha) but it also made the logo… too complex to be a logo, frankly. This is something that needs to go on tiny spice jars, after all—there was too much detail. So I knew we needed to simplify during the next round, probably reducing everything back down to just the star anise, a shape that the client had actually mentioned being drawn to in the creative brief.

Notice how we’re getting very symmetrical and stamp-like at this point.

The next step in my is the creation of black and white : rough digital renderings of several ideas. Sometimes these are derived directly from my sketches and sometimes they’re derived from ideas that came up during the process of digitizing those sketches. My main goal is to deliver very divergent possible to my client, so there will be at least one option that they find agreeable.

The way I explain this step to my clients is that logo concepts are like potential ancestors of their final logo. The final design will likely be the grandchild or great grandchild of one (or more) of the concepts. They are solid ideas, but they have many iterations ahead of them. So it's now the client’s job to pick the concept they feel has the best chance of evolving into the right by the end of the process.

That can be a hard task, so here’s what I ask them to consider: Which concept has the right balance and contrast between graphic and typographic elements? Which concept most effectively addresses the audience, brand elements, and stylistic preferences they identified in the creative brief? Which core elements do they like most? Do any of these concepts evoke a particular emotional response (good or bad)?

The Philadelphia Spice Company selected the bottom right option to move forward with, adding that they would like to lean into the mandala look and would like to see more actual spices represented.
