This gentleman told me he started as a mechanic, including for Citroën, then became a company driver. He has been a driver now for 40 years, regularly working 70 hours a week. Why doesn’t the company hire more people? “I don’t know,” he said. Maybe something to do with costs? After so many hours sitting, his leg hurts, but he keeps working. The trips to JB are not pleasant, because his Singaporean license plates have attracted attention from robbers, who don’t believe him when he says he has no cash. “You’re Singaporean!” So of course he has money, lah! With self-driving cars becoming more mainstream, what will happen to the older employment model? Does “work hard, and work your way up,” still apply?

Nick F. hails from Middlesbrough, England, home of the parmo. Near Newcastle, the town was so dangerous, Nick wouldn’t leave home after 7:00pm. When Nick visited Singapore, he knew he wanted to stay because it was safe. He now works on compliance manuals for oil tankers, and business is booming. Higher oil prices mean more companies want to deliver as much oil as possible to capitalize on opportunities for higher profits. Interestingly, despite his many years in Singapore, Nick sounds Scottish. I looked up Middlesbrough, and it is near Scotland. As Scots become more assertive, if they eventually favour separation from England, what will happen to oil and gas jobs in England? Whatever the result, it sounds like Nick will be staying safe in Singapore.

This gentleman told me he was Brasilian and moved to Singapore after meeting his girlfriend. He works for Brasil’s most important corporation, Petrobras. With oil prices skyrocketing, it turns out the socialist Lulu’s approach was prescient. The government increased reserves and kept more oil for domestic use, thus saving Brasil’s economy from massive shocks. Whether capitalism or socialism works better, we won’t know in the abstract; sometimes, being lucky is the answer.

The city of Santa Clara hosted a 5K marathon today, and it was over by 10:00am. I saw this family outside while ordering a large egg samosa at a Yemeni coffeeshop. The son has been running since at least high school, and his parents came to support him. The father, now retired, was careful to point out, “We walked,” as their son ran. Sometimes the best stories are simple: hominim bipedalism plus family support = love 🩷❤️💙

It’s not every day you meet a tennis player and coach from Howard University at a bus stop, but Santiago’s backpack was so unique, I had to give him a compliment. It turns out the backpack is a brand from his favorite tennis player, Roger Federer, whose style he calls “simple and elegant.” Santiago started tennis at the age of five, when his father took him to Silicon Valley Tennis Academy in Santa Clara, California. From the moment he picked up a racket, Santiago was enthralled. Later, he was recruited by Weil Tennis Academy and even named his father’s company, Gripspin Tennis. 🎾 If you don’t believe in love at first sight, you need to study the affair between tennis and Santiago—it could be a story for the ages.

If SCU basketball is competitive in March 2026, it may be due to its X-factor, Thierry Darlan. Yes, he’s tall and limber but his IQ is what really stands out.

SCU utilizes a “Duke + Swiss Army Knife” style of play, where everyone is expected to do all things within a highly planned system. It’s not the most exciting to watch, but like football/soccer, Mexico and Costa Rica are popular but lose to the more staid Germans and Dutch.

Watching Thierry on the hardwood, you can see he wants to operate at a higher, more octane pace but is constrained by a rigid system. More than once, he’s executed a perfect cut only to have a teammate unprepared to pass the ball. Even under constraints and even when his IQ sees something SCU’s slower system doesn’t, Thierry is a joy to watch. Merci beacoup to a young man who deserves to be much better known by basketball fans.
