If SCU basketball is competitive in March 2026, it may be due to its X-factor, Thierry Darlan. Yes, he’s tall and limber but his IQ is what really stands out.

SCU utilizes a “Duke + Swiss Army Knife” style of play, where everyone is expected to do all things within a highly planned system. It’s not the most exciting to watch, but like football/soccer, Mexico and Costa Rica are popular but lose to the more staid Germans and Dutch.

Watching Thierry on the hardwood, you can see he wants to operate at a higher, more octane pace but is constrained by a rigid system. More than once, he’s executed a perfect cut only to have a teammate unprepared to pass the ball. Even under constraints and even when his IQ sees something SCU’s slower system doesn’t, Thierry is a joy to watch. Merci beacoup to a young man who deserves to be much better known by basketball fans.
