You might be surprised to learn that ranking on Google has a lot to do with the categories you have selected for your business. There is an excellent free Chrome plugin (extension) called GMB Spy that allows you to view the categories that your competitors have selected. You can then use GMB Spy to learn about them.

For instance, see the screen shot of the day spa listed below. They have only selected the category "Day spa." However, if they looked at their competitors' listings that rank higher, they would learn that there are other categories such as "Facial spa" that will allow them to rank higher and also, more importantly, enable them to get more phone calls and new clients.

Caveat--you should only list categories that your business actually provides and that can be verified on your website. For instance, if you list the category of "Facial spa", you should have a service page that is called "Facials." It is becoming increasingly difficult to fool Google. Let me know if you have any questions!

Why should your business have a Google My Business profile? Google prioritizes search results for local businesses that have optimized GMB profiles. This means GMB profiles that have been verified, include photos from the location showing the services you do or products that you sell, categories filled out, services filled out, information on payments accepted, etc. If you are not getting the amount of leads that you want, reach out to us for a complementary online presence audit of your business today. No strings attached or hard sell tactics.

How I got into Internet Marketing

More than fifteen years ago, we invested a lot of money with a web developer to build a website for our growing hair salon business. The site was beautiful and had all the latest bells and whistles at the time. However, as great as it was, our site did not show up on the first or second page of the major search engines, which meant that our business effectively did not exist online. I was upset because I “assumed” that if we invested in a robust website, our site should naturally get high rankings—this could not be further from the truth!

As a remedy, the website developer suggested that we do paid search advertising. So, we complied and were spending upwards of $700 per month on paid search to attract new clients.

The problem I quickly learned with doing paid search is that it did not help our organic (natural) rankings improve in the search engines. Meaning, even though we were spending $700+ per month on paid search, our website was still appearing beyond the first two pages on the search engines.
