Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated each year from September 15th - October 15th. It began as a week-long observance in 1968, starting on September 15th, the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. During a period of time that is supposed to be a celebration of diverse Latinx cultures and histories, it’s ironic that the month started off by seeing these communities bearing the brunt of an extreme heat wave in California.

In observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, JCI’s own Bella Mendoza writes about her and her family’s experience with immigration:

“Growing up, the story of how some relatives arrived in the U.S. was frequently told at our family gatherings. To me these were stories of a hero’s journey, full of adventure and enough suspense to keep us children on the edge of our seats as we waited to see if our protagonist would make it across the immigration checkpoints or escape from the chasing INS agent.

However, as I got older, I began to see that these were not simply entertaining stories– but actual accounts of the treacherous journeys that my mother’s cousins endured as they persevered to make America their home. By the time I left for college, I understood that the inflection in their voice while they relayed the stories was a mask for their constant fear of deportation, that the crescendo in the plots were the scariest moments of their lives, and that their smiles as they concluded the story reflected their gratitude to the generous individuals who helped them become U.S. citizens and make this country their home. However, not every story has a happy ending.”

The struggle doesn’t stop after immigrants arrive in the US. To read more about the experience many immigrants face, head to JCI’s blog linked in the bio.

Yesterday, September 8th, 2022, Queen Elizabeth II, the world’s longest reigning monarch, passed away at age 96. She has lived through a lot during her lifetime, women finally getting the right to vote, World War II, India’s declaration of independence from the United Kingdom, the moon landing, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the creation of the internet, the end of British rule in Hong Kong, the list goes on. Although she is a remarkable figure whose presence has had an undeniable impact on the world, I and much of the world can’t help but have mixed feelings about her death.

Queen Elizabeth II is greatly revered by many, but her death has also revived criticisms about her role as the head of the British Empire. An era of which colonialism, slavery, and racism in countries across the globe. Although the British Monarchy has little political power, much of the criticism is linked to the relationship the British monarchy has with systems of oppression, forced labor, violence, and exploitation of natural resources is undeniable - which is why many of us are not grieving her passing.

This Labor Day, JCI would like to spotlight Lilly Ledbetter and her fight for equal pay. Lilly Ledbetter worked as a supervisor for Goodyear Tires for 19 years when she received an anonymous note detailing that she was making thousands of dollars less than her male coworkers in her same position, with similar or less experience and seniority. Nearing retirement and after spending many loyal years with the company, Ledbetter was appalled that her male colleagues were making 40% more than her paycheck for the same, if not more, work. She realized that over almost 20 years, the substantial financial loss between paid overtime and 401k was more than worth suing over, claiming pay discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 164 and the Equal Pay.

Because of her efforts and fight, we are one step closer to labor and gender justice. Read more about how on JCI’s blog by visiting the link in bio!

School On Wheels provides one-on-one tutoring, scholarships, digital learning access, school supplies, libraries, after school programs, and learning centers to students in need. Their original learning center, located in Los Angeles’s Skid Row, offers a safe and fun learning environment for after school support. Open six days a week year round, the learning center gives students access to computers, academic lessons, and summer programs, and because it is located in Skid Row, the neighborhood with the highest concentration of homelessness in the U.S., the learning center reaches the students who need their resources the most. Since the start of the pandemic, School On Wheels has even provided online tutoring as a way to adjust to the needs of their students.

The longer children stay on the street, the farther they fall behind they fall in school, which is why organizations like School On Wheels are instrumental in serving unhoused students across Southern California.

As we start the 2022-2023 school year, this nonprofit is the perfect place to donate school supplies or funds. To learn more about youth homeless and educational inequity, I would check out School On Wheels.

“With extremely low wages combined with a lack of individuals aspiring to become teachers, schools are facing a shortage of 300,000 teachers across the country. States and local officials are attempting to develop creative ideas to address this problem before school starts this fall – In Arizona, the state is no longer requiring bachelor’s degrees to teach; in Florida military veterans, with no teaching experiences, will be allowed to lead classrooms, and New Jersey districts are obtaining virtual teachers to instruct classrooms. Attempting to convince those who are not qualified to teach is a dangerous strategy for providing students a quality education and can lead to major disruptions in students' learning progress. Despite all the initiatives to encourage individuals to become instructors, few are jumping at the opportunity.”

Here at JCI, we are very excited about the as it could be a groundbreaking year for the United States Men’s National Team. JCI’s own Ben Hegedus writes: “Does the United States have a shot at winning the World Cup? They have the same odds as everyone else in the tournament, but it is still a longshot. The United States is entering the tournament with a team with the youngest average age at 24 years old. The lack of experience is very much a disadvantage for the U.S. team, but the overall goal for this team is to achieve a sense of identity from this World Cup. They have been drawn into a difficult group for the first stage of the tournament with England, Wales, and Iran, but getting out of the group phase should be achievable with our talent. Wales and Iran both have respectable teams that can beat anyone on any given day, but the England game will be the most important. This is by far the deepest team England has presented in years and should be a challenge for the younger, scrappier American side.”
