On Wednesday, August 19th, the U.S. gross national debt reached a massive $ 40 trillion. The national debt now represents 129% of U.S. GDP, exceeding the 119% recorded after the end of WWII. While the Iran War rages, the national debt presents a serious threat to America’s future prosperity. It is imperative that the Trump administration attempt to tackle the national debt before his term is over.

The United States is facing several grave issues at once: a Cold War and technological competition with China, a national debt exceeding $40 trillion, and inflation that remains too high. Despite the doomerism of the political influencer class, Elon Musk remains ever the optimist as he accelerates plans to build Tesla and SpaceX into the most disruptive tech companies on Earth. And if he succeeds, the resulting productivity and economic growth could help America confront some of these daunting challenges.

The Iran War is exposing the harsh reality that America’s defense industrial base is dangerously underbuilt for 21st-century military conflict. After the end of World War II, the United States emerged as the dominant military, technological, and manufacturing superpower on Earth. Since the 1990s, however, America’s defense industrial base has consolidated into a small number of large corporations, reducing competition while contributing to higher costs and diminished production capacity for essential weapons and military equipment. It is imperative, therefore, that the United States rearm more rapidly and efficiently, especially considering the growing threat from China and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

As of today, lawyers account for 47% of elected U.S. senators and 34% of members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Although recent data shows that the share of lawyers among our elected representatives is declining, the legal profession still wields disproportionate influence over America’s political and economic institutions. At a time of rapid technological change, our country increasingly needs leaders who understand not only the law, but also the technologies, industries, and economic forces that will shape tomorrow.
