Colonial Terminals Opens New Multimodal Breakbulk Facility on the Savannah River
Savannah, Ga., [September 8, 2026] — Colonial Terminals announced the opening of Foundation 3, a new breakbulk facility on the Savannah River and the latest addition to its terminal network, expanding the company’s capabilities to serve customers moving cargo throughout the Southeast and beyond.
The approximately 25-acre terminal strengthens Colonial Terminals’ ability to provide integrated marine, rail, trucking and storage solutions while increasing breakbulk capacity in one of the nation’s fastest-growing logistics markets. With direct vessel access, Class I rail service through Norfolk Southern and convenient access to Interstate 16 and Interstate 95, Foundation 3 provides customers with greater flexibility and efficiency in moving cargo through the Port of Savannah region.
While Savannah has earned recognition as one of the nation’s premier container gateways, Colonial Terminals remains committed to ensuring the region is equally positioned to serve the bulk and breakbulk cargo markets. Foundation 3 advances that vision by providing dedicated infrastructure, multimodal connectivity and specialized capabilities that strengthen Savannah’s role as a diversified maritime and logistics hub.

As supply chains continue to evolve, shippers increasingly seek facilities that can connect cargo seamlessly across multiple transportation modes. Foundation 3 was developed to meet that demand, offering customers a single location where cargo can move efficiently between vessel, rail, truck, and warehouse operations.
The facility features an 810-foot heavy-capacity dock capable of accommodating a wide range of breakbulk and project cargo vessels. An onsite rail yard with more than 14,000 feet of track, terminal-operated switching services and rail-served warehouse access further enhances the facility’s ability to support efficient cargo movement. Foundation 3 is designed to support 24-hour operations, providing customers with flexibility to meet demanding schedules and supply chain requirements.
Storage capabilities include two warehouses totaling 130,000 square feet, including a newly renovated dockside warehouse, as well as a 75,000-square-foot concrete storage area for outdoor cargo. Additional adjacent acreage provides opportunities for future growth as customer needs evolve.
Foundation 3 is equipped to handle a diverse range of commodities, including steel, forest products, project cargo, palletized products, super sacks, and other general cargo. Both union and non-union stevedoring services are available, allowing Colonial Terminals to tailor services to customer and cargo requirements.
The opening of Foundation 3 represents Colonial Terminals’ ongoing investment in the future of Savannah’s maritime and logistics industry. As global trade patterns continue to evolve, the facility positions the company to better serve customers while supporting the movement of cargo through one of the Southeast’s most important transportation corridors.
