Despite What You See On "Mad Men"…

To survive a career in Marketing and Advertising, you must:

Ask any former toll booth operator or retired grocery store checkout person if the fear of a robot invasion is justified, and they will most definitely say YES! It's a fact that technology continues to edge closer and closer to territories traditionally dominated by humans. As professionals in marketing and design, we must adapt to these changes to stay relevant and competitive.
As a marketing communications strategist and graphic designer, I've learned to keep my cool in the face of technological hiccups. This ability to stay calm and collected is crucial in maintaining focus and problem-solving abilities.

• Keep an eye on technology and constantly search for ways to improve your processes. This is not to be confused with cutting corners; it is all about working smarter. Allow technology to handle the mundane tasks and save your human energy for creativity.

• Embrace technology and become technologically savvy. In my experience, computers usually crash during critical project steps and well after midnight. Printers and projectors wait until just minutes before a major presentation before imploding. Know your machines enough to get them back up and running.

• When your presentation is dependent on a projector, bring an extra bulb and, to be totally safe, enough printed copies for audience distribution.

• Always wear socks to a crucial in-person meeting. If the power goes out, you can always use them as puppets.

When all else fails, breathe!

Free Work Begets Free Work

As a creative individual, you have been bestowed with a remarkable gift. Your ability to effortlessly conceptualize and build is not just a talent but a significant contribution to the world. Your solutions to problems that others find insurmountable are a testament to the value of your work.

"Can you please help me with this? It will only take you a few minutes."

"I need your help on a little project. It is something that you can do while you watch TV tonight."

These are requests that creative people hear continually. In most cases, the perception is that no price tag is involved. Make sure that your hard work includes fair compensation. I am pretty positive surgeons seldom perform operations on "spec."

There will be times when you voluntarily offer your services for free. Even if you are working on a pro bono basis, provide the documentation that demonstrates how much you should be compensated for your work.

Your creative gift has incredible value; make sure it is understood.

Thriving, Not Just Surviving: Mastering the Creative Career Hustle

What do these four 'creative geniuses' Socrates, Nikola Tesla, Vincent Van Gogh, and Herman Melville have in common? Despite their innovative thinking, they all faced financial challenges during their lifetime.

As a creative person, using your "gift" and building a successful and life-sustaining career is often a counterintuitive challenge.

Creativity in business is not about you. Clients are not paying for your self-expression. If this is your thought, you may want to look into the fine arts field. It's all about them, their customers, and their potential buyers. They want you to sell their services and products, relieve their pain, and help them make money.

You may be the world's next creative genius, but from a business standpoint, people must embrace 'your personal brand.' Your personal brand is how you present yourself to the world, and it's crucial in the business world. Despite what your peers think, senior decision-makers may find facial piercings or neck tattoos too troubling to see past. Your personal brand should reflect your creativity and professionalism while also being acceptable in a business context.

From the moment you walk into an organization, prove that you can make yourself useful immediately. Prioritize the company's needs above your professional desires. Unfortunately, for those starting a creative business career, this may mean making coffee, sweeping floors, or handling the reception desk. Eventually, you will be rewarded for your efforts; if not, it may be time to move on.

Always keep your eyes open for the next opportunity; after all, every creative job has an expiration date. Know that at some point during your creative business career, through either your desire or necessity, you will have the opportunity to strike out on your own as either a freelancer or entrepreneur. To identify these opportunities, stay updated on industry trends, network with professionals in your field, and proactively seek out new projects or roles.

The first victim of today's fast-paced creative businesses? Quality.

Extraordinary events that rocked the Creative Business forever.
1987: The Macintosh computer entered the creative studio
1991: The World Wide Web caught fire

So, what's the real significance of these events?
• Methodologies developed over hundreds of years are no longer relevant.
• "New Rules" for conducting business are constantly being introduced.
• "Handwork" has been transferred to technology that, despite being faster, is often untested.
• The compression of production schedules leaves little time for thoughtful consideration.
• Senior professionals must adapt to this new mindset or leave the profession.
• The consolidation of specifically designated roles has heaped more responsibility on the designer.
• Technologists have often led creative end-product generation and ignited in-house power struggles between themselves and the creative team.

What are some of the causes?
• Assertive hi-tech marketing has promised instant gratification to clients eager to shorten the creative process and save money.
• This same messaging has convinced many businesses that they can bypass creative professionals in favor of DIY processes.
• Marketing sales and collateral materials no longer have an extended shelf life. It is now possible to quickly churn out half-baked ideas, throw them against the wall, and see what sticks.

The first victim?
Quality.

Adapting to Change and staying relevant is essential for long-term career success. Rapid advancements in technology, shifting market dynamics, and the evolving nature of work create a landscape in which Change is the only constant.

I began my professional career as a graphic designer in 1984. The emergence of computers in the graphic design studio during this time caused a total shift in how work was handled. You either embraced this dramatic Change, left the business, or, as a graphic designer dinosaur, were forcibly sent off the cliff into obscurity.

A similar event occurred in the mid-1990s with the birth of the Internet and the world’s forced march from paper to pixels. Once again, many designers rode off into the sunset for refusing to adapt.

In any field, in today’s frantically evolving environment, professionals must embrace Change and proactively seek opportunities to grow, learn, and reinvent themselves.

1. Embrace Lifelong Learning
The skills and knowledge that got you to where you are today might not be sufficient for tomorrow’s challenges.

2. Develop a Growth Mindset
Embracing a growth mindset allows you to see challenges as opportunities rather than obstacles.

3. Build a Diverse Skill Set
Today’s employers are looking for well-rounded professionals who possess a combination of hard and soft skills.

4. Stay Agile and Adaptable
Agile professionals quickly respond to changing conditions, whether market shifts, new technologies, or evolving customer needs.

5. Network and Build Relationships
Networking provides support and guidance and exposes you to new opportunities and trends.

6. Cultivate Personal Brand and Visibility
A solid personal brand showcases your expertise, values, and the unique qualities you bring to the table.

7. Reflect and Reassess Regularly
Adapting and staying relevant also involves knowing when to shift gears.

Staying relevant in your professional career is not a one-time task but a continuous learning, growth, and adaptation process. Adapting to change may be challenging, but it is also an opportunity to redefine success and discover new potential within yourself. The key is to stay proactive, open-minded, and resilient in the face of Change.

A few years ago, I was struck by a sudden and alarming phenomenon affecting my peers' parents. Their careers, which had been steadily progressing, had come to a screeching halt at the approximate age of 46.

There are some obvious reasons for this. Many companies have collapsed, some merged, and others downsized. Individuals are also to blame. Perhaps they had become too comfortable in their cushy corporate roles or needed to keep up with the rapid advancements in technology, such as the shift from manual to digital processes or the adoption of AI and automation. The American dream of giving your most productive career years to a single organization has run its course. There is no longer a gold watch at the end of an illustrious 40+ year professional commitment.

As the careers of older workers stall, a new wave of workers enter the workforce. These are not just younger but also more technologically savvy and willing to work for a fraction of the cost.

From the time this middle-aged worker begins until they reach the age 46 plateau, they have reached many milestones, including finding a partner, building a family, paying for education, club sports, weddings – the list goes on. While their salaries and financial responsibilities increase, they are also encouraged to purchase larger homes, more expensive automobiles, and all of the trappings that signify success. For many, this is when the bottom drops out. They have slammed into the "Career Brick Wall."

The Hatherly Country Club is located in the seaside town of Scituate, Massachusetts. It features an 18-hole, old-style links golf course, a lively clubhouse atmosphere, and an active tennis program.

EYMER recently designed a logo to celebrate the club's 125th anniversary. The new graphic mark represents Minot's Ledge Lighthouse, located in the waters within view of the property. A kelly green four-leaf clover sits at the shield's base. It reminds Scituate of its ties to Ireland and the American home of many Irish immigrants. Because of this, many New Englanders still refer to Scituate as the "Irish Riviera."
