Quick one that costs nothing and takes about ten minutes.

Go look at your Google listing and check your photos. A lot of businesses have their logo up there and not much else. That's a missed chance, because people look at photos before they call — it's how they decide whether you're a real business with real work.

So add pictures of what you actually do. Not stock photos. The finished job, your work in progress, your truck, your shop, you. Real beats polished every time.

You might see a claim that businesses with photos get 42% more requests for directions. To be straight with you, that number comes from a Google study done back in 2014. The advice still holds. I just don't want to hand you a number that old like it's new.

If you want me to look at your listing and tell you what else is missing, send me your business name. Free, no pitch.

Joined the Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce today.

I spend most of my time telling people how to get found on Google. Turns out you still have to walk into a building and shake hands.

Looking forward to meeting more of you.

If you've noticed your Google listing getting fewer views this year, you're not imagining it, and it's probably not something you did.

There's a study going round with a big number in it: views on Google Business Profiles down 53.8%. You'll see that number used to sell people things over the next few weeks.

The half that usually gets left off is more interesting. Over the same stretch, actual customer actions — phone calls, direction requests, clicks through to the website — only dropped about 5%.

So the views fell off a cliff and the customers barely moved. Which tells you most of the views that disappeared were never going to call you anyway. People are getting their answer right there in the search results instead of clicking around, and the ones who were serious are still getting in touch.

Now the important part, and it's the reason I'm posting this rather than just repeating the number.

Read who the study was actually about. It comes from Birdeye, and their own methodology says it looks at "the biggest global brands using Birdeye" — big companies running hundreds or thousands of locations on a paid platform. It is not a study of independent businesses in Indian River County. It doesn't tell you what happened to a plumber in Vero Beach. And Birdeye happens to sell the software that fixes the problem their study describes, which isn't a scandal, but it's worth knowing who's doing the counting.

What I'd actually take from it, whatever size you are: stop judging your Google listing by views. Look at calls, direction requests and website clicks. If those held steady while your views dropped, nothing is broken and you don't need to buy anything.

One more from the same report, and this one is free to act on today — the average verified profile has fewer than one photo on it. Same caveat about who they measured, but the advice holds at any size. Go add some pictures of your work.

If you want me to look at your listing and tell you which of your numbers actually matter, send me your business name. Free, no pitch.

Quick question for anyone who paid somebody to build their website.

Can you log into the account where your domain name is registered? Not the website — the domain itself. If you can't sign in and see it sitting there under your own login, you don't control it. Somebody else does.

That matters because people usually tell you to look your domain up online and see whose name is on it. That doesn't work any more. Most of that information got hidden years ago for privacy reasons, so you look it up and it just says "redacted." The login is the real test. Nobody can hide that from you.

The website itself is a separate thing, and the answer surprises people. Under US copyright law, whoever creates something owns it unless there's a signed agreement saying otherwise. Paying the invoice, in full, on time, doesn't automatically make it yours.

Now here's the part a lot of people leave out on purpose, because scaring you is how they sell you a new website. You can still use your site. You almost certainly have permission, and nobody is coming after you. You just might not own it.

So one of those is worth checking today, and takes a minute. The other is worth sorting out before you hire somebody for your next build — not something to panic about with the one you've already got.

I'm not an attorney, and if you're actually in a fight with somebody over this, you want one of those rather than a video. But the login test is free.

If you try it and you can't get in, send me a message and I'll tell you what your options are. No charge, no pitch.

If you have a Google listing, there's a number in it that doesn't mean what you think it means.

Open your Google Business Profile and look at "Calls." Most people read that as the number of calls their business got. It isn't.

Google's own words for what that number counts: "The number of times a customer clicked on the call button on your Business Profile."

That's the tap. Not the conversation. Somebody taps it, it rings twice, they change their mind — that's a call in your report. Somebody catches the button with their thumb while scrolling past — that's a call too. Whether anyone actually spoke to you, and for how long, isn't in there at all.

And here's what makes that more than me being picky. On the same help page, Google explains that for Directions they changed how they count so it accounts for multiple taps, cancelled requests and spam. They say nothing like that about calls. They cleaned one up and told everybody about it.

I ran a call department before I did this for a living. The whole job was the gap between a dial and a connect, and that gap is big.

Two more from the same page that catch people out. Views counts unique people, once per person per day — so it'll always look lower than you'd expect, and that's normal, not broken. And Messages counts conversations, not messages.

None of it is useless. Watching the direction over several months tells you something real. But a jump in "calls" from one month to the next is not proof the phone rang more, and I've seen people fire a marketing company over exactly that.

If you want to know how many calls you really got, you need call tracking, or you need to ask people how they found you. Both are cheaper than getting it wrong.

Ever tried to find out what a website actually costs?

You look at three or four companies, and every one of them says "starting at" and asks you to book a call. Then you're on the phone with somebody, and the number you hear at the end has very little to do with the number that got you to pick up.

So I made a short video with mine in it.

Three pages, eight hundred dollars. Seven pages, fifteen hundred. Ten pages, three thousand. Those are on my website right now with a button to pay. No form, no call, no "it depends."

I'll be fair about why most people don't do this. Every job really is a bit different, and a published price can cost you work you might have won in a conversation. I've decided I'd rather lose those. If you walk away because you saw the number, we were probably never going to get along anyway.

And the part in the video that costs me money: if you're just getting started, you might not need a website yet at all. Sort out your Google listing first. That's free, and it'll bring you more work this month than a new site will.

It's a strange thing to say in a video about my prices. But it's what I tell people on the phone, so it may as well be what I say out loud.

If you want me to look at your Google listing, send me your business name. Free, no pitch.

Finished a website this week for a lawn care business right here in Sebastian — Aiden's Lawn & Landscape.

Here's the part I liked. Aiden is the owner's son. Ronnie named the business after him.

The main promise on his homepage is that the person you call is the person who shows up. No rotating crews, no dispatcher, no "the office will get back to you." Now, every small operator says something like that. Most of the time you just have to take their word for it.

His is different, and the reason is the name. He can't quietly send somebody else to do your yard when the business is named after his kid and he lives in the same town as you. The name is the guarantee.

So we didn't write a paragraph about how committed he is. We put his photo on the homepage, holding the trimmer, standing in somebody's actual overgrown yard. The name does the rest.

If you own a small business, that's the thing worth taking from this. The strongest thing about you is usually already true and already sitting there — it just isn't written down anywhere a customer can see it. It rarely needs inventing. It needs putting where people will find it.

He does mowing, cleanups, palm and hedge trimming, and the overgrown jobs a lot of people won't take on. If your yard has got away from you this summer, he's local and he answers his own phone.

Ever wondered why your business shows up for some searches and not others? There's one setting behind most of it, and Google doesn't warn you when it's wrong.

It's called your primary category. It's on your Google Business Profile, and it's the field that decides which searches you're even eligible to appear for. When it's set wrong, nothing tells you. Your dashboard still says the profile is complete. Still says verified. You're just quietly not showing up.

I see it all the time around here. A plumber whose category says "Services." A roofer listed under "Contractor." Both of them invisible for what people are actually typing into Google.

Fixing it takes about two minutes and costs nothing. Go into your Business Profile Manager, edit your profile, and look at business category. You don't need me or anybody else to do that for you.

One word of caution though. Change that one thing on its own — don't go in and update your category, your hours, your services and your business name all in the same afternoon. Making a lot of changes to important parts of a profile at once is one of the more common reasons listings get suspended, and a suspension is a much bigger problem than a wrong category.

If you'd like me to take a look at yours, send me your business name. It's free, there's no pitch, and if it turns out to be a ten-minute fix you can handle yourself, I'll tell you which ten minutes.

Quick heads up for any contractor running Google's Local Services Ads — the ones with the "Google Verified" badge that charge you per lead.

Google confirmed on Monday that there's a bug in that system. Their Ads Liaison said, word for word, "We identified a bug and are actively working to resolve it."

What advertisers are reporting is their ads getting disconnected from their Google Business Profile. One described his longest-running account unlinking over the weekend, and he had to call support to get it put back. Others can't get into the platform at all.

To be straight with you: Google confirmed a bug but hasn't said which one. So the unlinking and the confirmed bug might be the same thing, or might not. I'd rather tell you that than pretend I know.

Here's the part worth acting on. If your ads went quiet, do not start changing your Google listing to fix it. That instinct is the dangerous one — too many edits to important parts of a profile is one of the top causes of a listing getting suspended. You'd be turning a temporary Google problem into a real one of your own.

Call Google support, get the link restored, and leave the profile alone.

And nobody can fix this for you, me included. It's on Google's end. If someone offers to sort it out for money, they're charging you to make a phone call you can make yourself.
