What things can’t YOU live without?

I’ll be honest, washing my face, coffee and a good stretch gets my day started on the right foot. And then around 2:30... I need to reboot with another coffee ☕️

Today, I’m working from a small corner in the cafeteria at St. Jude Children’s Hospital while I wait for them to call me back to recovery for my daughter. I can’t believe it’s been almost two years now since we found out she had brain cancer 😦 Time sure does fly!

Thankfully the Lord saw fit to let us continue to enjoy her sass and smiles much longer and for that I’m so grateful. Today is just a routine check up and then we’ll be back to life as usual in a few days. 🛫

Whenever I travel, a notebook, my phone, headphones and computer accompany me ALWAYS... I consider it a privilege to be able to run a business while on the road even for personal things and it’s a life I wouldn’t trade for the world.

I like to think of myself as a “super-dorky-introverted-with-extrovert-tendencies” type of gal and over the past year since relocating across the country, I have had the pleasure of working with clients who have challenged the very limits of what I thought I was capable of.⠀

You know when you have that group of friends or as us millennials might say your “day-ones” that have been by your side one crazy dream after the next, cheering you on and supporting you over a cliff (where are my Scandal fans at 🙋🏽‍♀️)? Well sometimes I feel like my clients fit that bill.

Of course I love that my clients keep me in business. I love more that they recommend me to their friends and families, but honestly what I love the most about them is that they consistently broaden my horizons and entrust me to do what I love. Take Ashley, owner of Amour de Sucre, for example. From the day I met this chick, I just knew we’d become friends! She’s pretty awesome and her desserts seriously take the cake... haha 😂 see what I did there! I warned you, I’m as dorky as they come!⠀

I do this every now and again, and it’s always a challenge to introduce myself for the first time to those of you who are new around here, while still sharing something unfamiliar with those who’ve known me a while. ⠀

Funny thing about me, though, I’m always up for a challenge! ⠀
⠀
So hi! 👋🏼 I’m Chrystien but those closest to me usually call me Sunshine, primarily my mom... hey mom!⠀
⠀
I’m a photographer and graphic designer but as a kid I always thought I’d grow up to be lawyer. 👩🏽‍💼⠀
⠀
I’m passionate about what I do as a photographer because I get to create some serious magic with this beautiful little black device... I’m talking ground. breaking. 😋⠀

And as a graphic designer because I get to work with other creatives and small business owners in changing or updating their visual presence as it aligns with the vision of their company. 👩🏽‍💻⠀

I never take for granted that I have the opportunity to infuse my creativity into other’s lives and businesses. It’s pretty awesome actually!⠀

Some fun facts:
• A perfect day for me always includes waking up to kiss my babies.
• I can’t go more than a few hours without getting sidetracked from whatever I’m doing... let’s call it a mental break 😉
• If I were confined to eating a single item of food for the rest of my life it would be tacos.
• My jam right now is Better When I’m Dancin’ by Meghan Trainor and the last movie I saw in the theatre was Mission Impossible-Fallout—SO. GOOD. But I’m really looking forward to seeing The Upside with Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston. It looks really good 🤗

When I was a sophomore in college I remember thinking I never want to look back on my life’s path and regret not taking opportunities due to fear of the unknown.⠀

Life thus far has not always been smooth sailing but I can say, I’ve taken full advantage of every opportunity I thought might serve me well (whether it actually did or not). I’ve taken some great advice along the way and some that was not so good but that’s life, right?⠀

“What you call an ending, the Creator calls a beginning—the end for a caterpillar is just the beginning for the butterfly.”⠀

What’s the best thing you did so far this summer?

I know for most people, fall has set in and you're wearing cozy sweaters and cute boots, but here in Arizona it's still a bit warm. Of course, if you're from here you might disagree but this Michigan-bred chick is still HOT! 🔥

If I had to distill 2018 into its best part, I'd honestly have to say we'll see after I take my kids to their first state fair this weekend.

The one thing I wanted most from starting my own business, was having the freedom to just do whatever with my family whenever we wanted. I know lately I’ve been a workaholic, but every now and then, I remember how important it is to wind it down once in a while.

A couple months back I did an engagement session giveaway and it was soooo much fun!

Honestly, planning was a little bit stressful but it was totally worth it and I'm so glad that I had an amazing team of vendors to collaborate with and this awesome couple for winning.

Yo! Sometimes my mind wonders. Not "Hmm, what should I eat today?" but more like "Why do we call them French fries when they're really from Belgium?" type of wondering... anyone else like that? 🍟

If your curiosity is anything like mine, then we are going to be such great friends, haha! And if your musings happened to involve how I shoot portraits or outside weddings with harsh light, today I'm sharing 3 key insights.

1️⃣ I use a small aperture, for those who aren't camera savvy, it just means that I only allow a limited amount of light to enter my lens.

2️⃣ When positioning my clients, rather than finding a shaded area, I tell them to find their shadows and face that way. Facing away from the sun reduces the harsh light and shadows that may fall on their faces.

3️⃣ I typically bring my huge 5-part reflector thing-a-ma-bobber and use it to bounce light back onto my clients as they are facing away from the sun.
