Q: What was the “Crow Rebellion” of 1887?

A: Eight prisoners were in foot shackles (click photo to enlarge) at Crow Agency (Montana), awaiting transport by steamboat to the infamous Fort Snelling prison in Minnesota. The Crow tribe had never been at war with the U.S. Army, and had supplied scouts to Col. George Custer. The story behind this photo is long, but hopefully interesting.

The wars with the Northern Plains Indians were winding down by 1877, and ended with Sioux Chief Sitting Bull’s surrender in 1881.

In 1887, Sword Bearer led a retaliatory raid against the Blackfeet who had earlier stolen horses from the Crow. Sword Bearer and his followers returned with horses, and displayed their success at the home of the hated Indian Agent. Shots were fired, reportedly not with intent to kill, but some bullets hit the agent’s home. He telegraphed nearby Fort Custer that he was under attack.

Over a period of weeks, reinforcements from other forts raised troop numbers to over 1,200. Many white settlers fled.

Sword Bearer believed that he could not be killed as long as he had his sword in battle. He gained some followers by proclaiming his powers, and by urging a return to the values of their grandfathers.

In a bravery parade in front of troops and Hotchkiss cannons, Sword Bearer wore paint and ceremonial finery. Shots were exchanged and fatalities occurred. Sword Bearer was finally hit in the shoulder, and the Crow warriors retreated. The unarmed Sword Bearer was found and then killed by a reservation policeman with a single shot to the head.

This 1887 incident was three years before the similar Ghost Dance religious movement that ended with the Wounded Knee Massacre of the Lakota in South Dakota. Few people realize that the ancestors of Native Americans arrived in North America around 15,000 years ago. Over thousands of years, they built a rich world of diverse communities, complex societies, and distinct cultures—each deeply rooted in the land.

Before Christopher Columbus set foot in the Americas in 1492, the Indigenous population is estimated to have reached over 70 million. What is now the United States was home to roughly 562 tribes, each with its own language, traditions, and a deep spiritual connection to nature.

Some of the largest and most well-known tribes include the Cherokee, Navajo, Sioux, Iroquois, Apache, Comanche, Pawnee, Choctaw, Mohawk, Cree, and Ojibwa—each once flourishing and sovereign across vast regions of the continent.

The map below is a rare artifact that captures North America before European contact—a time many refer to as the “Glory Days” of Indigenous nations. While Mesoamerican civilizations like the Maya and Aztec fell early to Spanish conquest, many interior North American tribes remained autonomous, some resisting colonial forces well into the 19th and even 20th centuries.

At their peak, Native peoples across the Americas spoke close to 4,000 languages, reflecting a cultural diversity on par with the greatest civilizations in human history.

But the European conquest that began in 1492 brought catastrophe: pandemics, warfare, forced displacement, and slavery caused a dramatic collapse in Indigenous populations. When the United States was founded, Native tribes were officially regarded as “semi-sovereign nations,” yet they were increasingly pushed off their lands, silenced, and stripped of their autonomy.

This map is more than a geographic document—it is a memory of a thriving world erased from most textbooks. It serves as a powerful reminder of the richness, resilience, and rightful place of Indigenous peoples in the history of this land—before that history was rewritten by those who came to conquer it.
