Chief Iron Tail (1842 – May 29, 1916), also known by his Lakota name Siŋté Máza, was an Oglala Lakota chief and one of the most famous Native American celebrities of his time. His image was widely circulated across continents, and he became especially known for his distinctive profile featured on the Buffalo nickel (Indian Head nickel) from 1913 to 1938.

Iron Tail got his name from a story his mother told: as a baby, she saw warriors chasing buffalo with their tails standing upright like shafts of steel. This striking image inspired her to name him Siŋté Máza, later translated by white onlookers as Iron Tail.

As a star performer with Buffalo Bill's Wild West, Iron Tail toured internationally. He performed alongside Buffalo Bill at iconic venues such as the Champs-Élysées in Paris and the Colosseum in Rome, earning the admiration of European aristocracy.

One of his most enduring legacies is his profile on the five-cent coin known as the Buffalo nickel, a design that captured the native beauty of the American West. Notably, he modeled for sculptor James Earle Fraser, with Wild West performer Bee Ho Gray acting as his interpreter and guide during his visits to Washington, D.C., and New York.

In May 1916, while performing with the Miller Brothers 101 Ranch Wild West in Philadelphia, Iron Tail fell ill with pneumonia and was admitted to St. Luke's Hospital. Due to miscommunications and unfortunate timing, he was sent on a train ticket home to the Black Hills. On May 28, 1916, while in transit in South Bend, Indiana, he passed away. His body was eventually returned to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, where he was buried on June 3, 1916, at Holy Rosary Mission Cemetery.
