Samuel Pack Elliott (born August 9, 1944) is an American actor. He is the recipient of several accolades, including a Screen Actors Guild Award and a National Board of Review Award.
He has been nominated for an Academy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and two Emmy Awards. Buffalo Sundown: A Legendary Nez Perce Warrior and Rodeo Champion

Born in 1863 and known by several names—George Jackson, Buffalo Sundown, and Waaya-Tonah-Toesits-Kahn (“Earth Left by the Setting Sun”) or We-ah-te-nato-ots-ha (“Blanket of the Sun”)—this remarkable Native American left an unforgettable mark on history.

Buffalo Sundown was a nephew of the famous Chief Joseph and grew up riding his Appaloosa pony from the time he could walk. By age 14, he was trusted to care for his tribe’s horses and help herd them during the challenging 1877 Nez Perce War.

On August 9, 1877, during an ambush by U.S. cavalry at Big Hole in Montana, Sundown was badly burned when his mother’s teepee was torched. Despite this, he cleverly hid under a buffalo robe and managed to outwit the enemy.
Later, while the Nez Perce were trying to reach Sitting Bull’s camp in Canada, U.S. forces launched a surprise attack near Snake Creek in the Bear Paw Mountains. Even though Chief Joseph eventually surrendered after a three-day standoff, Sundown, wounded but determined, escaped by clinging to his horse so that it appeared riderless. With a small group of survivors, he made it safely to the Canadian camp.

In 1916, at the age of 53—more than twice the age of his competitors—Buffalo Sundown became the first Native American to win a World Championship Bronc Rider title. He remains the oldest person ever to win a rodeo world championship title.

His incredible achievements have been recognized with posthumous inductions into several halls of fame:

Our grandfathers defeated Custer at the Greasy Grass (Battle of the Little Bighorn). The warrior on the left is Scarleg, the one who shot Custer twice after Quick Bear knocked him flat with a war club. Hump 2 (horseback) was the son of Hump and one of Crazy Horse's first cousins. Hump 2 was also at the Greasy Grass and shot in the leg. The bullet passed through his leg and killed his horse. When the horse fell, it pinned Hump 2's leg. He was saved by two of our warriors pulling him out from underneath his horse. Additional details can be found our the book "Crazy Horse the Lakota Warrior's Life and Legacy"
