One of the quiet reasons projects go sideways: you never actually find out who's working on your thing.

You talk to a salesperson. Then a project manager. Then the work happens somewhere you can't see, by people you've never met, and every question gets relayed through two other humans before it comes back slightly wrong. Telephone, but with an invoice attached.

We're small on purpose. You talk to the people building it. Ask why something works a certain way and you get an answer from the person who decided it, not a summary of an answer.

Not exactly a revolutionary business model. It's just how it ought to work.

If you're weighing a project right now, that's a fair thing to ask anybody you're considering. Who specifically is doing the work, and do I get to talk to them?

Here's something we say that probably costs us work. You might not need a new website.

A full rebuild is the expensive answer, and sometimes it's the right one. The site's ancient, the business changed, the thing genuinely can't do what you need. Fine. Rebuild it.

But a lot of the time the site is basically okay and it's just slow, or awkward on a phone, or missing the one page people keep calling to ask about. That's a much smaller job. Wildly different invoice.

Worth knowing which situation you're in before anybody starts quoting a rebuild. If someone looks at your site for ten minutes and immediately recommends the most expensive option on the menu, file that away.

Ask for the cheap fix first. If there isn't one, now you know.

Most people are going to meet your business on a phone.

They're in a parking lot. They're on the couch. They're standing in somebody else's store deciding whether to drive to yours instead. That's the real first impression. Small screen, one thumb, zero patience.

Meanwhile a lot of sites get designed on a big monitor and checked on a big monitor. So the version almost nobody sees is the one that got all the attention.

Try this today. Pull up your site on your phone, but search for it the way a customer would instead of using the shortcut you've got saved. Find your hours. Call yourself in one tap.

If any of that made you go "huh," you just found something worth fixing.

Standing offer. We'll look at your website and tell you what's wrong with it. No charge.

Not a sales call with a report stapled to it. An actual list. How fast it loads, how it behaves on a phone, what's standing between people and your phone number, and anything that's broken that you'd have no way of knowing about.

Then take that list wherever you like. Your current developer. Your nephew who "does computers." Nobody at all. It's yours either way.

We do this because most of the time people genuinely have no idea. The site looks fine on the laptop it was built on. Nobody's opened it on a phone with two bars in about two years. The contact form quietly stopped sending emails last spring and there's exactly one way to find that out.

Send us your link and we'll take a look.

People are usually a little nervous about hiring a web company. Fair enough. That reputation was earned.

The horror stories all sound the same. Paid up front, went quiet for two months, got back something that looked nothing like the conversation. Or the site launched fine and then nobody picked up the phone when it broke.

So here's how it goes with us.

We start by talking about your business, not your website. What brings work in, what wastes your time, what you wish the thing did.

You see the design before anything gets built. Changing your mind at that stage costs nothing. Changing it after we've built it is where projects get expensive and everybody gets grumpy.

Then we build it. Custom, fast, actually yours.

And after launch we're still around. That's the part people care about most, and it's the part that keeps getting skipped.

No surprises. That's the whole pitch.

Templates are great. Right up until they aren't.

They get you online fast and cheap, and that's a real win. We're not going to pretend otherwise. But we see the same story constantly. The template does 90% of what a business needs, and the missing 10% is the part that actually makes money.

The booking flow that has to work a specific way. The quote form that needs to talk to the software you already pay for. The thing you sell that refuses to fit into anybody's idea of a product page.

So you start bolting things on. A plugin. Then another plugin. Then a third plugin to fix what the first two did. The site gets slower. It breaks every time something updates. A year in you've spent more than a custom build would have cost and you own a Jenga tower.

Custom isn't about being fancy. It's about the site fitting how you actually work.

There's a difference between having a website and having one that does anything.

Plenty of businesses have a site. It's online. The phone number is right. Somebody built it a few years back and it has been quietly sitting there ever since, like a houseplant nobody waters.

A site that's pulling its weight looks different. It answers the questions people call to ask, so they call ready to buy instead of ready to ask. It books the appointment at 11pm while you're asleep. It tells somebody three towns over that yes, you come out that far.

Fair question to sit with: in the last month, what did your website actually do for you?

If the honest answer is "existed," that's a fixable problem.

Three seconds. That's about how long somebody looks at your website before deciding to stay or bail.

Not enough time to read your About page. Definitely not enough time to hunt around for your phone number.

In those three seconds, they're really answering one question. Does this place seem legit?

Slow loading says no. A layout built for a monitor from 2014 says no. A menu with fourteen options and no obvious place to click says no, loudly.

None of this is a mystery, though. Load speed is a number you can look up. The phone problems show up in about four seconds of scrolling.

So try it. Pull up your own site on your phone and pretend you've never seen it before. Find your hours. Try to call yourself.

If that was harder than it should be, send us the link. We'll tell you what's going on, free.

We also have a free website audit tool that we built directly on our site!
