A contractor I talked to recently had 67 Google reviews. All five stars. 4.9 rating. He was still losing jobs to a competitor with 31 reviews and a 4.7.
The difference wasn't the stars — it was the words.
His reviews said "great work, very professional." The competitor's said things like "replaced the main shutoff valve same day" and "fixed our water heater before the home inspector showed up."
Google's AI reads review text to match businesses to searches. Specific language wins. Generic praise doesn't give it much to work with.
