Day 30
The Gap Between Who You Are and Who You Are Becoming

Here we are. Day 30. And I want to close this whole journey with the most important thing I can tell you.

Over the last 30 days we have walked through the signs of becoming the kind of person people are drawn to. We talked about the reality that most people are too busy surviving to start living. We talked about what it looks like to live with integrity while the world is watching. We talked about the five daily habits that make it real.

And if you are anything like me, you read through some of those signs and thought, that describes me. And you read through others and thought, I am not there yet. That gap, the distance between who you are today and who you are becoming, that gap is where the work is. And it is closer than you think.
You were not put on this earth to just get by. You were not made to punch a clock, pay the bills, and hope for a decent retirement. God placed something in you that the world needs. If someone had told me this at 35. Well, they probably did. I just did not listen. I should not have quit so quickly. I should have made it over one more hurdle. Crossed one more finish line. But here is the thing about purpose. It waits. It does not give up on you just because you gave up on it. And every day you spend not living it out is a day the world misses what you were supposed to bring to it.

Live with integrity. Love people well. Leave something that matters. That is not just a slogan. That is the invitation of a lifetime. And the way you accept it is not complicated. I get up every morning before the noise starts, somewhere between five and six thirty, and I spend time with the Lord. I pray for people. I listen to Christian music. I read something from the Bible. I write a few notes. I say the Rosary. That hour or two before the world wakes up is how I keep my footing. It is not fancy. It is just faithful. And it is available to you right now, today, wherever you are.

Thank you for walking through these 30 days with me. It has been an honor to share this journey with you. Now go live it. The world is waiting for what God put inside you.

Question of the Day
What is the one thing you know you were made to do that you have not fully started yet?

Scripture of the Day
Ephesians 2:10. “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (NIV)

Prayer of the Day
God, thank You for these 30 days. Thank You for not giving up on us when we gave up on ourselves. The gap between who we are and who You made us to be is not a failure. It is an invitation. Close that gap in us. Fan the flame. Grow the compassion. And let the legacy we build with the rest of our days point every person we meet back to You. We are willing. Use us. Amen.

Day 29
Five Habits That Build Integrity and Grow Compassion.

Part Two
Yesterday I gave you the first three daily habits. Start with why, learn something, and encourage one person before noon. Today I want to give you the last two. And I saved the most important one for last.

Habit number four. Get around people who still have fire. You become what you are around. That is not a theory. That is forty years of watching people grow or stagnate based on who they let into their inner circle. If you are spending most of your time with people who are coasting, complaining, and comfortable, you will coast, complain, and get comfortable too. Find the people who are still curious, still building, still believing something is possible. Their energy is contagious, and so is the opposite.

Habit number five. Ask one question at the end of every day. Not what did I accomplish. Not how productive was I. Ask this instead. Did I leave the people I was around today better than I found them? That one question will reorient your entire definition of a successful day. If the answer is yes, you are building something that matters. If the answer is no, that is information. Tomorrow you get another shot.

Five habits. Start with why. Learn something. Encourage someone before noon. Get around people who still have fire. And before bed each night, ask whether you left people better than you found them. That is the daily practice that builds integrity, grows compassion, and turns who you are into something that lasts.

These are not complicated. But they are powerful. And the difference between the person who reads them and the person who lives them is the difference between good intentions and a legacy.

Question of the Day
At the end of today, will you be able to say you left the people around you better than you found them?

Scripture of the Day
Micah 6:8. “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” (NIV)

Prayer of the Day
God, surround us with people who still have fire. Protect us from the slow drift toward comfort and complacency. And at the end of this day, let us look back and know that the people we were around are better because we were there. That is the legacy we want to build. Not someday. Today. Amen.

Day 28… READ MORE!!

Five Habits That Build Integrity and Grow Compassion.

Part One
For the last 27 days we have been talking about who to become. Today and tomorrow I want to talk about what to do. Because legacy is not built in the big moments. It is built in what you do before breakfast, between meetings, and on the days nobody is watching.

Here are the first three habits that will change your life if you practice them every single day.
Habit number one. Start with why before you start with what. Before you check your phone, before the day gets its hands on you, spend five minutes with the question that matters most. Why am I doing this? Who am I doing it for? What did God put me here to contribute today? That five minutes is the difference between a day that has direction and a day that just happens to you.

Habit number two. Learn something every single day. Read. Listen. Ask somebody a question you do not already know the answer to. Study human nature. Pay attention to where culture is heading and what the next generation is dealing with. The leader who stops learning stops leading. Keep the fire burning every day without exception.

Habit number three. Encourage one person before noon. Not a mass email. Not a group text. One real word to one real person. Tell somebody what you see in them. Tell them they are doing better than they think. That habit done daily, without expecting anything back, is one of the most powerful things a human being can do for another human being.

Those three habits alone will change the way you walk through every single day. Tomorrow I will give you the last two.

Question of the Day
Which of these three habits is the one you need to start tomorrow morning?

Scripture of the Day
Psalm 90:12. “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (NIV)

Prayer of the Day
Lord, teach us to number our days. Not in panic but in purpose. Help us start tomorrow with why before what. Keep us learning something new. And before noon, put one person on our hearts who needs a word of encouragement. When we are tempted to skip these because the day got busy, remind us that these small habits are the ones that build the life You designed us for. Amen.

Day 27.. READ MORE!!

You Stay Curious About People, Not Just Problems
There are two kinds of leaders in this world. The first kind asks questions to solve problems. What went wrong. How do we fix it. Who is responsible. Those are fine questions. Necessary, even. But they are not the questions that change relationships.

The second kind asks questions because they genuinely want to know the person in front of them. Not their performance. Not their output. The person. What drives them. What keeps them up at night. What they are proud of that nobody has ever asked them about.

Retreat ministry teaches you this faster than anything else can. When someone shows up for a weekend at a place like Mercy Retreat Center, they come in with a mask on. Everybody does. But somewhere around Friday night or Saturday morning, if you have created a safe enough space and asked the right questions, the mask comes off. And what is underneath is always more beautiful and more broken than what was on the surface.
That is why the most powerful question you can ask another human being is not what do you do or how can I help. It is tell me something about yourself that I would never know unless you told me. That question opens a door that nothing else can. And when you walk through it with somebody, you do not come back the same.

Curiosity about people also helps you lead them better. When someone does not want to be led, do not fight them. Help them figure out what they actually want to accomplish, help them get it, and move them somewhere that fits them better. Then go to the next person. No drama, no ego. Just genuine curiosity about what makes them tick.
Stay curious about people. Not because it makes you a better leader. Because every person you meet is carrying a story that deserves to be heard.

Question of the Day
When is the last time you asked someone a real question. Not about their work, but about their life?

Scripture of the Day
Proverbs 18:13, “To answer before listening, that is folly and shame.” (NIV)

Prayer of the Day
Father, make us the kind of people who ask the second question. Not just how are you but how are you really. Give us genuine curiosity about the people You have placed in our lives. Help us draw out the deep waters in someone today. Not to fix them but to know them. Because every person we meet carries a story You wrote, and it deserves to be heard. Amen.

Day 26.. READ MORE!!

You Make Encouragement a Daily Habit, Not a Special Occasion
I want you to think about the most encouraging thing anyone has ever said to you. Not the big award speech. Not the toast at the banquet. I am talking about the word somebody said on a random Tuesday when nothing special was happening that you still carry with you right now.

I can tell you mine. I was years into my career, deep in the grind, not sure if anything I was building was making a difference. And a man I respected, a man whose opinion I valued more than he probably knew, pulled me aside in a parking lot after a meeting and said, Mark, you need to know something. What you are doing matters. Do not stop.

That was it. Took him maybe ten seconds to say it. And I have carried it for more than twenty years. Because it came at the right moment. It came from the right person. And it came when I needed it more than he could have known.

That kind of encouragement does not happen at the annual dinner. It happens in the hallway. In the parking lot. On a Tuesday morning when you take thirty seconds to tell somebody they matter. And most people do not do it. Not because they do not care. But because they are busy and they figure the other person already knows.

They do not already know. Trust me. Most people are walking around carrying more doubt than you realize. And a word from you, spoken at the right moment, from a place of sincerity, can turn somebody’s whole week around. Maybe their whole life. Do not wait for the banquet. Say it today.

Question of the Day
Who needs a word from you today. Not because they earned it, but because they need it?

Scripture of the Day
1 Thessalonians 5:11. “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” (NIV)

Prayer of the Day
Lord, put someone on our hearts right now who needs a word of encouragement today. Not next week. Not at the next event. Today. Give us the courage to say it out loud, even if it feels awkward, even if the moment seems small. Because You know the weight people are carrying, and sometimes one sentence from the right person at the right time is all it takes to keep them going. Amen.
