KSD joins Kentucky and the literary world in mourning the passing of Wendell Berry, who died August 31 at his home in Port Royal, Kentucky. He was 92.
In 1977, Wendell Berry wrote 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘜𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢: 𝘊𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 & 𝘈𝘨𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 which gave citizens a language with which to envision a more sustainable future, one that included stewardship of the land, and a return to thinking locally about the production and distribution of goods and services.
In April of 2013, The Berry Center organized a three-day conference to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the publication of his book. KSD had the privilege of designing the event program and participating in this first-of-its-kind conference titled "What Will It Take to Resettle America?" — a gathering of authors, community activists, farmers, sociologists, and agricultural economists convened to discuss the cultural shift toward sustainability.
From 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘜𝘯𝘴𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢: 𝘊𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 & 𝘈𝘨𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦:
FOR OUR HEALING WE HAVE ON
OUR SIDE ONE GREAT FORCE:
THE POWER OF CREATION,
WITH GOOD CARE,
WITH KINDLY USE,
TO HEAL ITSELF.
His voice will be missed. His ideas are more relevant than ever.
The Berry Center is putting Wendell Berry’s writings to work by advocating for farmers, land-conserving communities, and healthy regional economies. Learn more: https://berrycenter.org
