Don't add people to your email list or newsletter without getting their explicit permission.

Not only is really annoying from the perspective of someone who did not ask to be added, but ultimately it's likely to hurt YOU and your business.

*If you are paying for your email service provider, why would you want to pay for someone who doesn't want to be there?
*It's going to negatively impact your open & click-through rates, which could mean fewer people who did ask to be on your list might see your emails
*If too many people mark your emails as spam, you could get banned from your email service provider (and then you won't be able to email anyone)

Email sequences are the foundation of email marketing automation. Without them, you've got people signing up for your freebie...and then what?

They're at the mercy of if and when you decide to send out a newsletter.

But let's be real, how many of us are *actually* consistently emailing our list?

So if you get a new person subscribing to your email list and you go weeks before you send out an email to your list, then you've lost out on that super important window of time to start building a relationship.

That's where email sequences come in. They're automated and can be set up so that they go out as soon as someone subscribers. But before we get to that point, we need to break down what exactly an email sequence is and when to use them.

Raise your hand if you've ever revived the default "confirm your email" email after signing up for someone's freebie 🙋‍♀️

I can't tell you how many times I've received the default email your email service provider has set up. Half the time when I go to confirm my subscription I can't even remember what it is I signed up for, because there's NOTHING in that email to indicate it.
..no branding
..no reminder of what the business is
..no message about what's going to happen when I click "confirm subscription"

Who KNOWS what could be waiting for me on that other side of clicking "confirm"? 😱

Sending the default double opt-in email shows that you didn't take a moment to make your new subscribers feel welcomed when they sign up for your email list.

A key part to email automation is personalizing the experience for the person on the receiving end.

Whether you’re offering a coupon code, a handy checklist, or a free mini course, make your first interaction in their inbox memorable and leave potential clients and donors actually excited to open that next email from you.

Instead of leaving the default message, spend a few minutes personalizing the automated email subscribers receive after signing up for your newsletter, aka the double opt-in). Here’s a few tips to help you get started:

Make sure the branding matches your business'

Change the subject line of the email so that it both reminds them of what they signed up for while also enticing them to actually open the email

Update the language in the body of the email so that it sounds like something you would say 

Change the copy on the confirmation button with something more in-line with your brand instead of the default “click here to confirm your subscription”. You can also remind them what they’ll be getting once they confirm their subscription
