Defined Edge / Social Media Strategy

Defined Edge / Social Media Strategy Because effective marketing is more than just posting more.

Defined Edge walks alongside small businesses and nonprofits and turns ideas into meaningful marketing through strategy, storytelling, and content that connects. A lot of business owners and nonprofits feel overwhelmed trying to figure out what to do with their marketing. I help them sort through it, simplify the decisions, and either guide them or take it off their plate - depending on what they

need. I work with organizations that are tired of guessing and want a clearer, more practical way to approach their marketing.

They’re small. They don’t have much to work with individually, but somehow, they manage to accomplish a lot.

Not because one ant is extraordinary. Because small, consistent efforts add up.

That matters for small businesses and nonprofits. You don't need the biggest budget, the biggest audience, or the biggest team. But you do need to be intentional about where you put what you DO have.

An ant doesn't waste energy trying to be an elephant. It just does its part, over and over again. Maybe that's the lesson.

Stop measuring your business against organizations that have more resources than you. Figure out what your resources can do — and use them well.

Small isn't the problem. Being SCATTERED is.

And that's one of the things I help businesses and nonprofits work through at Defined Edge: figuring out where your limited time, money, and resources will make the biggest difference — and building a strategy around it.

If you know you're capable of more but aren't sure where to focus, let's talk.

You know that feeling when you're hungry, but you don't really know what you're hungry for?

You open the refrigerator. Nothing sounds good. You check the pantry. Still nothing.

So you head to the grocery store, figuring you'll know what you want once you get there.

An hour later, you're unloading bags onto the counter. You've bought plenty of food, but somehow you still don't have anything for dinner.

Marketing without a strategy can look a lot like that.

You know you need to be doing SOMETHING, so you start adding things to the cart. More posts. A new trend. Maybe video. Maybe email. Whatever seems like it might be the thing you're missing.

And you're still hungry.

The problem isn't that you don't have enough ingredients. You haven't decided what you're making.

That's what strategy helps you figure out - what you're trying to accomplish, who you're trying to reach, what they need to hear, and what your marketing actually needs to do.

Because a cart full of groceries doesn't guarantee dinner.

Sometimes you don't need more ingredients. You need a recipe.

If your marketing feels like a full grocery cart and an empty dinner table, we should probably talk.

Apparently, the Defined Edge business page is now accepting followers. 😂

Yep. Followers. No application, no interview, no references required, and no awkward sales pitch waiting in your inbox. Just people who want to hang around and see what happens.

So, what's in it for you? Well, you can expect some random entertainment from a business page that occasionally forgets it's supposed to act professional, motivation when you least expect it, and those moments when you find yourself thinking, “Wait…is she talking directly to me?”

There might even be an occasional “oh crap…she's right” light-bulb moment. And I'll probably share some thoughts you didn't know you needed until you can't forget them, along with marketing observations that might make you question what you've been doing. And, of course, you'll get a front-row seat to whatever the heck Cindy is thinking about this week. 😂

I can't promise you'll become more productive by following me. But if you're already sitting there scrolling instead of being productive, go ahead and hit that Follow button and see what happens.

Your procrastination was happening anyway. It might as well be entertaining. 😉😉

I've always had a soft spot for the ones who don't have the biggest budget, the biggest audience, or the biggest name behind them.

Maybe it's because I've spent enough time around small businesses and nonprofits to see how much they're capable of doing with what they have.

I've also seen how often they're overlooked because they can't compete with the marketing budgets of larger organizations.

And honestly, that has never sat right with me.

I don't believe a small service-based business or nonprofit should have to spend like a big company to deserve thoughtful marketing or a chance to grow in its community.

Your budget may determine how much you can do. It shouldn't determine whether your business gets to be seen.

That's a big part of why I built Defined Edge.

I'm interested in helping smaller organizations figure out what actually matters, tell their story well, and make the most of the resources they have.

Because being the underdog doesn't mean you're not capable of winning.

Sometimes you just need to stop trying to play the game exactly like the big guys.

There are certain little things I notice almost immediately when I look at a business's marketing.

Not because I'm looking for something to criticize. It's because those little details can tell me whether the business is actually paying attention to what their customers are seeing.

Maybe it's an outdated offer that's still sitting on the page. Maybe the hours don't match. Maybe the business changed something six months ago, but their social media is still talking about the old version of it.

None of those things are going to make or break a business by themselves.

But they're clues. And when I start seeing several little clues like that, I start wondering what else might be getting missed.

That's one of the things I look for when I'm looking at a business strategically. I'm not just asking, "Are you posting?"

I'm asking, "What is the customer actually seeing?"

Sometimes the smallest detail tells you more than the big picture does.

And now I'm wondering... what might you be missing because you're too close to it?

That's actually why I created my business self-audit. It gives you a chance to step outside of the day-to-day and take a more objective look at what's happening in your business.

I've noticed something in a lot of the business conversations I've had lately.

People aren't necessarily struggling because they don't care about their business or don't know they need to market it. They're overwhelmed. They don't know what's missing. They don't have enough time to figure it out.

And when something feels too big or too complicated to deal with, what do we tend to do?

We walk around it. We put it off. We keep doing the things we can manage and tell ourselves we'll deal with the bigger issue when things settle down.

The problem is, that can get expensive.

The website that isn't doing its job. The marketing that isn't really going anywhere. The opportunities you're missing because nobody knows what you actually do. The money you're spending trying different things without knowing what needs fixing in the first place.

Eventually, "I don't have time to deal with this right now" starts costing you more than the time it would have taken to deal with it.

So... what are you running from? Is this something I can help you with?

Some businesses post every day.

They're consistent.
They're visible.

And yet...

if they stopped posting tomorrow, would anyone really notice?

Not because they aren't working hard.
But because their marketing hasn't given people a reason to remember them.

A strong marketing strategy isn't just about showing up.

It's about knowing:

• Who you're trying to reach
• What you want them to understand
• Why they should choose you
• What action you want them to take

When those pieces are missing, it's easy to become just another business in someone's feed.

Visibility may get someone's attention. Giving them a reason to choose you is what helps your business grow.

Before you spend another month wondering why your content isn't connecting, let's figure out what's missing and build a strategy around YOUR business... not someone else's.

That's where I come in.

08/12/2026

Have you ever bought something because it looked amazing on someone else...
only to realize it wasn't the right fit for you?

Marketing can work the same way.

A strategy that helped another business grow may not create the same results for yours.

Not because the strategy was bad.
Not because your business is failing.

Because the fit matters.

Every business has a different story, audience, goals, and challenges.

That is why I don't believe in one-size-fits-all marketing.

Before choosing a direction, I want to understand the business behind it.

Because the best strategy isn't the one everyone else is using.

It's the one that fits your business.

The right solution starts with understanding the right problem.

Before you try the next marketing trend, ask yourself:

Does this actually fit my business... or am I trying to make someone else's strategy work for me?

If your marketing feels like a pair of jeans that never quite fits, maybe another trend isn't your answer.

Maybe it's time to understand what your business actually needs.

That's where I come in.

I help small businesses identify the right problems, uncover the opportunities they're missing, and create a marketing strategy that fits... not a formula they have to force.

08/10/2026

There comes a point in almost every business where the excitement starts giving way to questions.

The advice you've been following starts to feel conflicting.

The things that used to make sense... don't anymore.

You find yourself asking:

Am I focusing on the right things?
Am I solving the right problems?
Is my marketing actually the issue... or is it something deeper?

Have you reached that point yet... or are you living it right now?

If so, you're not alone.

I believe this is often the moment when business owners stop chasing quick fixes and start asking better questions.

Because not every business problem is a marketing problem.

Sometimes the challenge is your messaging.
Sometimes it's your positioning.
Sometimes it's your offer.
Sometimes it really is your marketing.

The key is identifying the RIGHT problem before investing in the WRONG solution.

The best solutions begin with the right diagnosis.

If you're at that point where every solution seems to raise another question, maybe the next step isn't another tactic.

Maybe it's identifying the right problem first.

That's the conversation I love having.

Before anyone gets uncomfortable with that word... let's talk about what that really means.

A business is an organization that has a purpose, people it serves, relationships it builds, and a reason it exists.

A nonprofit may not exist to create profit.

But it still has to:
• communicate its mission
• connect with its community
• build trust
• attract supporters and volunteers
• show the impact of its work

Because a powerful mission that people don't understand is a mission people may never have the opportunity to support.

The difference isn't whether you need strategy.
The difference is what your strategy is designed to accomplish.

For a business, it may be building customers.
For a nonprofit, it may be building awareness, support, and community connection.

But both need people to understand why they matter.
That is where intentional communication makes a difference.

If you've ever wondered whether your nonprofit's message is communicating your mission as clearly as it could, I'd love to explore that with you. Sometimes a fresh perspective is all it takes.
