For decades, North Carolina led the world in the production of to***co, its signature crop. Hornworms loved it, often found crawling to***co leaves.

Hornworms are the caterpillars of sphinx moths, a family of mostly large moths that are well-known for rapidly flapping their wings back and forth while hovering in front of flowers. But there are many species of sphinx moths, including hummingbird moths, native to North Carolina.
