In the early days of industrial printing, when type was physically outlined by a punch-cutter, new typefaces were tested on a word with plenty of legs and curves: Hamburgevons. The classic German nonsense-word became the modern "Hamburger test," which looks great on a shirt in Helvetica (seen here causing a stir on the streets of Dublin, Ireland). Let's hear it for Kotaro Furukawa, the 2026 recipient of our Helveticahaus scholarship.

Remixing is his gift, whether using iPhone effects in poster design or sampling old soul in a DJ set. This sparks immediate recognition and connection, says Kotaro, whose background is in UI/UX design in his native Japan.
