If you’d like links to what I used to reopen our pool- comment “SUMMER” and I’ll dm them to you 🏊♂️
Here’s a step by step of how we opened the pool after it sat all winter, save this if you have an above ground pool!
☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️
1. Remove the winter cover/tarp
Try not to dump dirty cover water into the pool. Scoop leaves/debris first, then remove the cover.
2. Scoop out anything gross
Use a pool net to remove leaves, dirt, bugs, etc. from the remaining 1 foot of water.
3. Check the liner and frame
Look for holes, tears, sagging legs, rust, or anything shifted over winter before adding more water.
4. Reinstall/inspect the pump + hoses
Make sure:
• hoses are connected tightly
• filter cartridge is clean or new
• drain plugs/caps are sealed
• pump is sitting level
• no cracked hoses or fittings
5. Start filling the pool
Fill it back up to the normal water line, usually about halfway up the skimmer/opening or the recommended Intex fill line.
6. Once full, turn the pump on
Run the pump and check for leaks around all hose connections. Let it circulate for several hours before testing.
7. Test the water
Use test strips or a liquid test kit. Check:
• chlorine/free chlorine
• pH
• alkalinity
• stabilizer/CYA if your strips test for it
8. Balance pH first
Ideal pH is about 7.2–7.6.
If pH is too high, use pH decreaser. If too low, use pH increaser.
9. Shock the pool
Since it sat all winter, shock it after pH is in range. Follow the shock bag/bottle instructions for your pool gallons.
10. Run the pump 24 hours
After shocking, run the filter continuously for about a day. Brush the pool walls/floor during this time.
11. Clean or replace the filter
After the first 24 hours, your filter may be gross. Rinse it well or replace it.
12. Retest the water
Before swimming, make sure:
• chlorine is in the safe swim range, usually 1–3 ppm
• pH is 7.2–7.6
• water is clear enough to see the bottom
13. Start normal maintenance
Once balanced:
• run pump daily
• keep chlorine steady
• test water a few times per week
• clean filter often, especially with an Intex cartridge
