A Sunday thought for series authors: book 1 is still somebody's first book. 📚

Every new release brings in readers who've never heard of you. Some of them would happily go back and read the whole series, if anyone told them it was there.

But launch week takes everything you've got, so the backlist goes quiet. Not because it stopped selling, but because nobody had time to point readers to it.

The expensive part of a messy author business isn't the mess.

It's the reader who finished book one, loved it, and never found out book two exists.

It's the 15 superfans who'd happily buy early access... if anything were set up to offer it.

It's the three days of launch week you spent rebuilding a process you've already built four times.

None of it shows up as a line item. That's why it never gets fixed. 📉

"I know what I should be doing. I just haven't set it up."

I heard this from authors with six books out. Real reader lists. Real revenue.

They knew they should segment the list. They knew launches should be repeatable. They knew ARC follow-up shouldn't live in a spreadsheet.

They knew. It just wasn't built.

For a long time I answered that with better training. It didn't work.

The gap was never knowledge. Building a system takes a different kind of time than writing does, and the writing always wins. It should.

So I stopped teaching and started building it for them instead. 🛠️

Hot take: Most fiction authors overcomplicate their newsletters.

They think they need a 12-email welcome sequence, A/B tested subject lines, and segmented automations from day one.

And because it feels like so much… they just don't email at all.

Here's what actually works when you're starting out:

→ ONE simple welcome email that says who you are and what readers can expect
→ ONE email per month (or every two weeks) that's genuinely you
→ ONE clear way for new readers to join (a reader magnet on your website)

That's the whole system.

Once that rhythm is running smoothly? Then you layer in the advanced stuff. But the system comes first. The optimization comes later.
