P.S....

Red used to be my favorite color. For the last few years, I've been a little afraid to wear it. A statement shade, it's everywhere around my community these days.

There are red flags dropping F-bombs instead of red stripes with blue stars. Red hats adorn the heads of men carrying rifles instead of rakes in the garden at the end of my street. I'm heartsick, but I'm also headstrong and willing to stand up, stand out, and fight for my values, my family, and the future of my country.

So today, as I head to the polls, I dug out my favorite "Vote Kind" t-shirt, a string of pearls, and a neglected pair of red Chucks. Because I believe wisdom, truth, and kindness can win. And if anyone is unclear about what my showy red choices mean this week, it means I'm with her.

How are you using alt text on your social platforms and website?

Alt text was initially created so that screen reader users could understand the image, photo, or graphic in front of them. It’s an accessibility feature.

You may have also noticed it showing up with an image fails to load.

It’s pretty helpful, right?

But marketers had to go and ruin that, too. Since SEO bots crawl alt text as part of their page analysis, some marketers had the bright idea of stuffing it with keywords to influence the outcome.

The result? Alt text that reads like nonsense and is entirely unhelpful to those using screen readers.

As values-driven marketers, we need to reclaim alt text for our audiences.

Here are some tips:

☑️ Keep it brief so it doesn’t interrupt the flow of the content.

☑️ Provide a basic description of the image within the context of the page.

☑️ Use the keyword if possible, but don’t force it.

☑️ Don’t use “image of…” or “picture of…” because it is already assumed that the text describes the image.

☑️ Avoid repeating information already easily accessible in the text surrounding the image.

This simple practice takes only a few minutes, but it can make a big difference for your audience.

How often have you had a project or an idea get stuck in the planning phase?

We have this definition of a strategic plan posted on our website:

“A strategic plan presents the specific long-term goals of a company and the strategies and specific tactics you will use to achieve those goals.”

I have met and worked with many leaders who have a plan that lists their long-term goals. They may even have specific campaigns they’d like to complete during certain times of the year or ideas for pitching or networking to grow their business.

But the gap between planning and doing can be enormous without the right support.

How do you actually make it happen?

I have found the answer to be in the second half of that definition: with strategies and specific tactics.

When you know the next right step, it’s easier to start.

When I first started as a solopreneur, I learned some hard lessons about networking.

As a director for a networking organization, I spent more time volunteering for them than I did building my business, which meant I missed some important opportunities.

This might be fine in a non-profit or advocacy environment, but when the purpose of the group is business, volunteering should be a secondary consideration.

Now, I pass this lesson along to my coaching clients when we’re realigning their networking strategy with 2 key tips:

Understanding when it is appropriate to focus on networking and when not to is how you respect others.

Understanding when you should invest more of your time in volunteering and when you need to protect your energy is how you respect yourself—and your business.

It’s human nature to be influenced by what other people think—but it doesn’t have to be manipulative.

If your clients love what you offer, showcase their content. Encourage written or video testimonials and reviews, and include them wherever you can:

➡️ On your home page
➡️ On product/service pages
➡️ On social media
➡️ On your Google Business Profile

User-generated content doesn’t cost you anything—but it does increase your brand’s value in the eyes of the people you serve.
