FKCI Awards, Promo & More founder, Fred Booher, started working in his father’s green house at the age of 10. Fred began experimenting with photography at the age of 12 and eventually became the photographer for the Vandalia Butler High School’s weekly newspaper, a position he held for 5 years. Fred also did some freelance photography work for the Dayton Daily Newspaper. In 1955, while Fred was ta

king pictures of a wedding, he met his future wife, Kay (the K of FKCI). They were married in 1958 and the Lord blessed them with two children, Shawnie and Don. In 1970, while working as a full-time engineer, Fred’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to start a part-time engraving business, and FKCI was launched. In 1977, he began a 4-year period where he worked as a full-time salesman in the Dayton area, during which time he became acquainted with many local businesses. In 1982, Fred committed himself to engraving full time. The business grew primarily by word of mouth and God’s blessing. Kay worked in the shop and their daughter, Shawnie, worked in the office for about 13 years. Their son, Don, has managed operations and production since 1984, overseeing product quality, and on-time delivery. Without Don’s contributions, none of this would have been possible. As the company grew, additional staff were added to the company, and Fred and Kay’s grandchildren even helped out. In 2017, long-time family friend Greg Frye joined FKCI. Greg brought 25+ years of customer service, business and financial management experience. FKCI moved from Beavercreek to Springboro, OH and Fred and Kay retired. FKCI continues to add new equipment and products to meet the needs of our customers and has expanded relationships with industry suppliers and partners to complement those products and services produced in our own shop.

How promotional products are packaged and presented matters more than most people realize. The same item feels different when it arrives in thoughtful packaging versus a plain plastic bag.

For client gifts and executive recognition, presentation elevates perceived value. A quality pen in a gift box feels more premium than the same pen in a poly bag. A branded journal with ribbon packaging signals thoughtfulness. Individual gift boxes, tissue paper, custom packaging—these aren’t just aesthetics. They communicate that the gift was chosen carefully and presented intentionally.

For employee recognition, presentation shows respect. Anniversary gifts, milestone achievements, and appreciation items land differently when they’re presented well versus handed over casually. For conference giveaways and event materials, packaging affects logistics. Items that come individually wrapped are easier to distribute.

Products with retail-quality packaging can go directly into attendee bags. We work with packaging options ranging from simple to premium depending on your goals and budget. A tumbler for a trade show giveaway might need basic packaging. The same tumbler for a top client deserves a gift box. Context determines the right level of presentation.

Branded apparel only looks professional if it’s maintained properly. Here are a few simple care habits you can share on how to keep promotional clothing looking good longer.

- Embroidered items: Turn inside out before washing to protect the thread. Wash in cold water on gentle cycle. Avoid harsh detergents that can fade thread color over time. Air dry when possible—high heat can damage embroidery backing.
- Screen printed items: Also turn inside out before washing. Cold water preserves ink better than hot. Avoid fabric softener, which can break down the print over time. Dry on low heat or hang dry. Never iron directly on the print.
- Heat transfer items: These are the most delicate. Wash inside out in cold water, gentle cycle. Always air dry; heat is the enemy of heat transfers. They’ll crack and peel with repeated high-heat drying.
- General tips for all branded apparel: Don’t overload the washing machine; items need space to move freely. Avoid bleach unless specifically approved for the fabric and decoration. Store properly; hanging polos and jackets prevents permanent wrinkles.

When companies invest in quality branded apparel, proper care extends that investment significantly. We can provide care instructions specific to your items. Questions? Call us at 937-426-6843 or fkci.com.

Summer apparel requires different fabric choices than winter gear.

Here’s what actually matters when the temperature climbs:

- Moisture-wicking fabrics pull sweat away from skin and dry quickly.
- Polyester blends and performance fabrics excel here.
- Cotton feels comfortable but holds moisture, which means it stays wet and heavy in summer heat.
- Breathability allows air flow to cool the body.
- Loose weaves and technical fabrics designed for athletic wear provide better ventilation than tight, heavy materials.
- Lightweight construction means less fabric bulk trapping heat against the body. A lightweight performance tee weighs noticeably less than a standard cotton shirt.
- UV protection matters for outdoor workers and event staff. Some performance fabrics include UPF ratings that block harmful sun exposure.

For summer work crews, outdoor event staff, or teams spending long hours in the heat, fabric choice directly impacts comfort and performance. A breathable, moisture-wicking polo keeps people cooler than a standard cotton version. The difference shows up in how people feel after hours in summer sun.

May is fall event planning season. While summer hasn’t fully arrived, organizations preparing for September, October, and November events are thinking about them now.

Here’s the pattern we see annually: August arrives, fall suddenly feels imminent, and everyone remembers they need promotional products for back-to-school programs, fall conferences, homecoming events, holiday preparations, and year-end recognition. Product selection narrows as popular fall items get ordered. The process that flows smoothly with planning becomes compressed without it.

Organizations that plan ahead do something straightforward: they review their fall calendar now and identify what they’ll need. Conference giveaways? Employee recognition for end-of-year milestones? Homecoming or back-to-school programs? Holiday gift planning?

That early identification creates space for thoughtful selection, artwork preparation, and production without rushing. What’s on your fall calendar? Corporate events? Educational programs? Year-end recognition? Start those conversations now. We’re here to help: 937-426-6843 or [email protected].

The proof approval step exists for one reason: to catch problems before production begins. Once items go into production with your approved proof, changes become expensive or impossible.

Here’s what to check carefully:
- Logo placement and size. Is it where you want it? Does it look proportional to the item?
- Colors. Is the PMS color information correct? Remember that screens display colors differently than physical products.
- Text. Check every word for typos. Verify phone numbers, websites, and email addresses character by character.
- Decoration method. Understand how your logo will be applied—embroidered, screen printed, engraved—and whether it will look as expected.
- Spelling of names or custom text.

The proof is your last checkpoint. Taking the extra time to review carefully beats discovering an error after 500 items are already produced. We build in proof approval time specifically so you can catch issues early. Questions about the proofing process? We’re here to help: 937-426-6843 or fkci.com.

Ordering apparel for teams or groups means getting sizing right. Here’s what we’ve learned after outfitting countless organizations.

Always offer a range of sizes, not just S-XL. People come in different sizes, and having 2X-4X options shows inclusivity. Nothing feels worse than being excluded because apparel doesn’t fit. Use a sizing chart with actual measurements, not just generic size labels.

A “large” from one manufacturer fits differently than another. Measurements eliminate guesswork. Consider ordering samples in key sizes before committing to bulk orders—and build in time for that step. Seeing and feeling the actual fit prevents surprises when 100 shirts arrive. Unisex sizing tends to fit men better than women.

If your team is mixed gender, consider offering both men’s and women’s cuts for better fit. Account for shrinkage. If items will be washed and dried repeatedly, factor that into size selection. Pre-shrunk fabrics minimize this issue. Collect size information ahead of time rather than guessing. A simple survey prevents ordering 30 mediums when you actually need 5 mediums and 25 larges.

Getting sizing right the first time means your team actually wears the apparel. Getting it wrong means closets full of branded clothing that doesn’t fit. Questions about sizing for your team? We can guide you: 937-426-6843 or fkci.com.

Summer is travel season, and luggage tags are one of those simple items that serve a practical purpose while keeping your brand visible. The Venezia Sightseer Luggage Tag features a clear display panel for ID information and a durable steel cable attachment.

We see companies use these for client gifts, employee travel programs, conference giveaways, and sales team incentives. Here’s why they work: travelers use them. Every airport trip, every business conference, every vacation—your branded luggage tag is there, visible and functional.

It’s also a natural fit for our engraving services. A professionally engraved luggage tag feels more premium than a printed sticker, and the engraving lasts through years of travel wear. For companies with frequent travelers—sales teams, consultants, executives—this is a thoughtful gift that actually gets used. It’s not sitting in a drawer; it’s attached to luggage moving through airports regularly. Small item, consistent visibility.

Sometimes a sample answers the question. Sometimes it just delays the decision.

We’ve seen both.

A sample makes sense when you’re trying to understand how something actually feels, looks, or performs.

Especially with apparel, higher-end items, or anything where quality is part of the decision

But for more straightforward products, specs and experience usually tell you what you need to know.

The key isn’t always ordering a sample.

It’s knowing when it will actually change your decision—and when it won’t.

Not sure which route makes sense for your order? Give us a call, and we can talk it through: 937-426-6843.

Outdoor events change how people interact with what you give them.

They’re not sitting at a desk.
They’re moving. Carrying less. Making quick decisions.

That’s why a lot of giveaway items get left behind.

Not because they weren’t good—because they didn’t fit the moment.

What tends to work better?

Things people can use right away.
Or easily carry with them.

Lightweight, functional items usually win here.

It’s less about standing out on a table and more about fitting into someone’s day as it’s happening.

That shift alone changes what performs.

If you’re planning an upcoming event and want help narrowing down what actually works, we’re always here to talk it through: 937-426-6843.

Two pieces of branded apparel can look almost identical on day one. Same color, similar fit, logo placed in the same spot. But after a few wears—and a few washes—that’s when the difference shows up.

One keeps its shape, holds its color, and continues to look polished. The other starts to fade, stretch, or lose structure, and eventually ends up pushed to the back of the closet or out of rotation entirely. At that point, it’s no longer representing your brand at all.

That’s usually not a branding issue—it’s a product selection decision made upfront. We’ve seen teams invest in apparel with good intentions, only to find that it doesn’t hold up the way they expected once it’s worn in real-life conditions.

The goal isn’t just to hand something out or check a box. It’s to choose something people will actually want to wear again, whether that’s in the office, out in the field, or even outside of work. That’s where quality and fit start to matter more than just appearance on day one.
