Melanie Wilt has never been one to sit on the sidelines when there's work worth doing.

She challenges our thinking, trusts us to do meaningful work and keeps Shift•ology focused on a purpose bigger than our practice.

She's built a team that cares deeply about its clients, rural communities and each other.

Happy Boss's Day, Melanie! We're grateful for your leadership, your conviction and the opportunities you've created for us to make a difference.

AI can help healthcare communicators work faster. But the real opportunity is what we do with the time it gives us.

On Oct. 17, Emily Bennett will join Wendi Koziol of Public Communications, Inc. at the PRSA Health & Life Sciences Conference for “From Complexity to Connection: Using AI and Storytelling to Humanize Complex Healthcare.”

They’ll share practical strategies for simplifying complex topics, strengthening storytelling and using AI to work smarter without sacrificing the authenticity and human connection that build trust.

Because AI doesn’t replace great communicators. It gives them more time to be great storytellers.

Farmers have a story worth telling, and too often, someone else tells it for them. At Shiftology Communication and Virtual Farm Trips, we work to connect consumers with the real people, science and decisions behind their food. This National Farmers Day, we're grateful for the farmers who open their gates, share their experiences and help build understanding between agriculture and the people it feeds.

What leaders do reinforces what they say. Your priorities are already communicating.

- Tell the team to stay focused on clients but schedule more internal meetings.
- Tell employees professional development matters, but cut the training budget.
- Say community engagement is a priority, but only talk to residents after a decision has been made.
- Tell customers service comes first, but make it nearly impossible to reach a person.

People believe what organizations do more than what they say. Communication can make a priority clear. Leadership makes it credible.

Take a look at what your organization says matters and where it puts its time and resources. Do they match?

Our team joined Mercy Health - Springfield Cancer Center’s fifth annual Pink Honor Walk on Friday. It was a beautiful night as our community came together to honor those impacted by breast cancer.

More information doesn’t equal more trust.

A hospital can publish pages of information about recovery. But the patient's question may simply be, “how long until I can work from home again?”

You can give someone 15 facts about how their food is produced. But if their real question is, “Would you feed this to your own family?” fact no. 16 probably isn't going to solve the problem.

Before deciding what your audience needs to hear, find out what they need you to understand.

Leaders don't have the luxury of waiting for every answer before they communicate. And communicating with credibility does not require certainty.

When you don't have all the answers, but your stakeholders are demanding information, try using this proven formula:
- Here's what we know
- Here's what we don't know
- Here's what we're doing about it
- Here's when you'll hear from us again

There's no guessing, speculation or ambiguity. And that creates trust.

Some of the most effective strategies aren't complicated. They are intentional communication practices that create clarity, give people meaningful opportunities to weigh in and allow us to keep making decisions when time was of the essence.

Healthcare communicators have a tough job: Make complex science understandable without losing the human story.

On Oct. 17, Emily Bennett will join Wendi Koziol of Public Communications, Inc. at the PRSA Health & Life Sciences Conference to share practical strategies for doing just that.

Their session, “From Complexity to Connection: Using AI and Storytelling to Humanize Complex Healthcare,” will explore how communicators can simplify technical information, tell stories that resonate and use AI to work smarter, without sacrificing authenticity or trust.

🎉 Shift•ology is officially an adult.

Eighteen years ago this weekend, we started with a big idea, a small client list and absolutely no clue what the next 18 years would bring.

Like most 18-year-olds, we’ve done a lot of growing up.

We’ve figured out what we’re good at — and what we’re not.

We’ve made mistakes, learned some things the hard way and gotten a whole lot more comfortable in our own skin.

We’ve made new friends, said goodbye to others and learned that the people you surround yourself with matter.

We’ve changed our look a few times. 😬

We’ve discovered what we believe in: science-based communication, candid counsel and work that creates tangible impact.

We’ve learned that being busy isn’t the same as being successful, bigger isn’t always better and sometimes the smartest thing you can do is change your mind.

And while turning 18 technically makes us a grown-up, we have no intention of acting too grown up.

We’re still curious. Still experimenting. Still asking “why?” Still pushing limits. Still finding better ways to help people understand complicated things.

Because if there’s one thing an 18-year-old company named after the science of change should know by now, it’s this:

You never really finish growing up.

Happy 18th birthday, Shift•ology. 🥳
