Former Southwest Missouri State University President Dr. John H. Keiser was a man of substance who inspired his staff and left a mark on the community.

He was the kind of leader we all aspired to be.

Here's part 2 of my look at Dr. Keiser's leadership:

Read below for part 2 of my opinion piece on Dr. John Keiser. This piece - part 2 of my series - was first published by the Springfield Daily Citizen on Saturday, April 4, 2026 .

"It's a privilege to be a Bear."

These words ended every speech given by Dr. John H. Keiser during his 12 years as President of Missouri State University (then Southwest Missouri State University).

His 90th birthday would have been March 12, and I am still struck by how many initiatives from his presidency are still in place. My most recent opinion piece published by Springfield Daily Citizen is the first of a two-part series highlighting Dr. Keiser's legacy:

This opinion piece was first published by the Springfield Daily Citizen on Saturday, March 7, 2026 . This is the first part of a two-part series on the legacy of Dr. John Keiser.

From “never take anything for granted” to “always carry a knife,” there are some lessons to be learned from TV’s “NCIS." Inspired by Gibbs of The NCISverse and his list of 38 rules, I compiled my own list of rules to live by.

No matter whether you call them rules, principles, North Stars, beliefs or a foundation, all of us need guidelines to help navigate life and careers. Having them seems especially important in 2026.

What makes your list? Here's mine:

The below piece was first published by the Springfield Daily Citizen on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026. Do you have rules you live by? Inspired by the television series “NCIS,” I spent time thinking...

The last penny minted for circulation was produced Nov. 12, 2025. After 232 years of service, I didn’t think the penny got a proper sendoff.

Here's my two cents on the penny:

The below piece was first published in the Springfield Daily Citizen on Friday, January 3, 2026. The penny was first produced in the US Mint in Philadelphia in March 1793, and the last penny for...

Will you make one or more resolutions for 2026? I plan to. The question for all of us is this: For 2026, will we — should we — focus our resolutions on broader goals rather than more personal ones?

I have plenty of personal habits that could use adjusting – they scream for resolutions to do better. But for 2026, I’m opening the aperture wider.

Family. Friends. Teachers. Foster and adoptive parents. Multigenerational households.

Our gratitude reminds us of what is good about our community, renews our shared values, and strengthens our bond as human beings.

❓ What are you thankful for as we enter into this holiday season?

I share my list in my most recent piece published by the Springfield Daily Citizen:

Guest columnist Paul Kincaid has a lot to be thankful for. In this column he highlights four groups for which he is particularly thankful.

Raising boys can be a wildlife-like adventure – crashing through boundaries, testing rules, and leaving a messy trail. But boys can mature and develop resiliency, loyalty and a love for each other. And even learn a couple of valuable life lessons along the way.

Trust me, I know. I was the oldest of five boys. Read more about my lessons learned from growing up in a house full of boys: https://www.kincaidcommunications.com/blog/lessons-learned-from-growing-up-in-a-house-full-of-boys

It’s been 50 years, but every baseball season I think about my baseball coach at Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma: the late Dr. Joe Record.

Dr. Joe Record was the kind of coach you didn’t want to disappoint. He knew what made me tick, just as he did all his players.

At Dr. Record’s celebration of life, his former players presented a plaque. It read: “Your leadership, wisdom and guidance have made us champions also in the game of life.”

Read more about Dr. Record:

Guest columnist Paul Kincaid reflects on the lessons he learned from his baseball coach, Dr. Joe Record.

To go or not to go, that is the question!

My 55th reunion is the first weekend in October, and the RSVP deadline is approaching. I need to decide, and I have mixed feelings.

All reunions are a reality check at a point in time. They prove that time marches on.

Yet, for a weekend, we recall our common experiences - our bond - from our formative years. These are the people with whom I rode that teenage rollercoaster.

It's time for guest columnist Paul Kincaid's 55-year high school reunion. Should he make the trip or sit it out?
