Success is rarely a solitary journey. While the myth of the lone hero is alluring, reality tells a different story. Even our most cherished superheroes had allies—Superman had Lois and Jimmy, Batman had Alfred and Robin, and even the “Lone Ranger” had Tonto.
The “pioneer spirit” often evokes images of families venturing into the wilderness alone. However, this notion is more a product of modern storytelling than historical reality. Lewis and Clark left Fort Mandan with 33 people, and their party grew to 59 before reaching the Pacific. Even famous mountain men like Kit Carson and Jim Bridger traveled in sizable groups.
Louis L’Amour once explained that his early gunfight scenes always included a missed first shot because he was paid by the word, and it was a good way to lengthen the story. Many of our historical references are embellished stories, but the truth is, the “West was won” and “America was built” by communities working together, supporting each other in their individual and collective efforts to create something lasting.
There’s a fascinating video about two young fish swimming around. An old fish swims by and says, “Hey boys, how’s the water?” As the young fish swim away, one looks at the other and says, “What is water?” This story beautifully illustrates how we can be unaware of the most vital aspects of our lives until someone else points them out.
Socrates once said, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” It’s crucial to examine our lives, our ideals, and our philosophies, ensuring they align with our true values and goals. Just like the young fish unaware of the water, we often need others to help us see the “water” around us.
Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Similarly, Jim Rohn advised, “Don’t join an easy crowd; you won’t grow. Go where the expectations and the demands to perform are high.” Surrounding ourselves with a supportive community pushes us to achieve far more than we could alone.
In the last 50 years, we’ve developed tools, technology, and financial resources that give the illusion of self-sufficiency. However, this illusion can be misleading. No matter how advanced our tools become, we will always need each other. Our greatest achievements often come from collaboration and mutual support. Embrace the power of community, and you’ll find that success is never a solitary journey.
Inspired by this belief, we are starting a weekly newsletter called The Business Collective aimed at fostering a supportive community where we can all grow and succeed together. Each week, we’ll share encouraging messages, business tips, and a section dedicated to referral requests from our network.
If you’d like to be a part of this community, please comment below or send us a message with your email, and we’ll add you to the list. Let’s grow together!
