Trying to buy prompt collections can only get you so far.

Figgin' ChatGPT 😡😤 😡

I’ve never seen a tool with more power and a worse onboarding experience.

You log in and there is just a blank page.

No welcome email.

No onboarding video.

No steps to follow.

Just a blank page and “figure it out.”

This has been driving me crazy, so I reached out to my friend Jonathan.

A true story about lead generation gone wrong (followed by an invitation):

Once upon a time, an ambitious business owner created a free giveaway to attract new leads.

His target market loved his "lead magnet." 8,000 signed up and gave the business owner their email addresses.

(8,000! That's a good lead magnet).

Then the business owner...
..did NOTHING!

He didn't send a single email to the leads. Not one. Just a thank you page with the lead magnet, then... crickets.

(Holy Missed Opportunity, Batman!)

This morning, the business owner cried out for help in an online business forum.
"I got 8k email addresses from my followers a few months ago. Now, I want to introduce them our new Facebook group to join via email. However, I am not sure what email platform is the safest to send out this many emails without landing in spam or getting flagged."

(Oy vey! 😖)

The spam folder is the least of his worries.

Imagine you're one of those 8,000 leads. Months have passed since you got the lead magnet. Then, out of the blue, you get an email from some guy who you might or might not remember, pitching his Facebook group.

It's like meeting a great-looking person at a bar...
..who gives you their number...
..and then months later...
..you call and say, "Ummmm... remember me?"

This won't go well.

Imagine, instead, if the business owner had followed-up immediately with those who requested the lead magnet.

When someone requests valuable content from you, that's...
..an invitation to establish a mutually-beneficial relationship with them -- right away.

They WANT to hear from you. They're likely to take a next step. Many will sign up for your next thing (such as your Facebook group). Many will eventually hire you...
..but only if you follow-up!

Memorial Day... I sent the following to my email list this morning:

I live in Missouri -- which never seceded from the Union during the Civil War but was recognized by the Confederacy as its 12th state.

In Missouri, neighbor fought neighbor. Sometimes brother fought brother. More than 100,000 Missourians fought for the Union. More than 30,000 fought for the Confederacy.

Today, we honor, thank, and mourn U.S. military personnel who fell in the line of duty.

I choose also to recognize those on the "other side." -- not to celebrate or endorse their cause, but to recognize their humanity.

We humans tend to dehumanize the other side. I guess that makes it easier to stake unwavering claims when we argue. I guess it makes it easier to fire deadly weapons.

But today, at least, let's remember: The other side sends humans to battle, too. Humans with spouses and children and mothers and friends.

In 2006, Clint Eastwood made two movies about the Battle of Iwo Jima. The first was Flags of Our Fathers which focused on the men who raised the American flag atop Mount Suribachi. The U.S. Marine Corps Memorial near Washington, D.C. (pictured with this post) depicts that flag-raising.

The second film was Letters from Iwo Jima. It told the story from the perspective of Japanese soldiers.

How many humans died in the battle? Estimates vary. More than 70,000 U.S. soldiers fought in the battle. Approximately 7,000 died.

Japan sent more than 20,000 soldiers into the battle. All but 216 of them died.
