I just wanted to say how wrong I was about Katie Pour

When I met her 19 years ago, during our interview for our open Designer role, I didn’t really think our tastes would align.

She had great artwork - but a lot of collage stuff that wasn’t my style, and not a lot of corporate focused design, which tended to be the types of projects Atomicdust worked on.

And I told her that. I was willing to give it a shot, but I had my doubts.

So, to prove me wrong, Katie decided to make some of the greatest brand work in the country for the next 19 years.

She designed restaurants that made our agency look cool. She built corporate brand identities so well thought out and beautiful that they almost didn’t deserve it. Her work has been featured in Comm Arts, Print’s Regional Design Annual, and Identity Designed.

It’s been published in books, blogs, and talked smack about by other jealous designers – myself included.

She is humble, maybe a tiny bit shy, but an absolute killer in her craft.

Also, when you work with her on a project, you might get to experience what we call “the whispers.”

The whispers are Katie in her quietest voice telling you to “move the type up.” “No, bigger.” “Perfect” as she sits behind you.

Pure genius. (Almost) pure silence.

Here’s to 19 years of being wrong, staying bright, and making Atomicdust what it is today.

Quinn Thompson's joined our team—and his paid media chops are leading to some pretty impressive results for clients...

He’s helped a commercial restoration company generate $700k+ in quotable business.

Achieved a 93% decrease in CPC after optimizing campaigns for a parts supplier.

And generated a 58% increase in inbound leads for a specialized engineering firm.

He also has a pretty big baseball cap collection.

Needless to say, we're thrilled to have him on the team.

Every Monday, a different person leads our all-team meeting and shares an idea or inspiration. Today we got abstract. Senior Designer Alice Lee walked us through a blind contour drawing exercise.

Blind contour involves drawing without looking at the paper, and without lifting the pen from the page. It helps increase observation skills and hand-eye coordination, and produces an imperfect, abstract “sense” of the subject.

It can feel a little uncomfortable. The results can be surprising. But that's also what creativity's about.

Here's to stepping outside your comfort zone this week and seeing things from new angles.
