Today I have been a business owner for 14 years...and what a ride it’s been so far. We saw the start of social media marketing and now the entrance of AI. We’ve seen platforms change owners and trends change...again...and again. Owning my own business was always a dream of mine and I am extremely blessed to still be doing it.
Here are 14 lessons I’ve learned from 14 years as a business owner...
1. It’s not all going to be sunshine and roses. You will have good days and you will have bad days.
2. Be thankful for the support you have. I couldn’t have done this without the support of my husband and my girls.
3. Surround yourself with people who will encourage you and challenge you. (I’m looking at you !)
4. Be flexible. Always.
5. Know where you stand and don’t be afraid to put your foot down, especially if something doesn’t align with your values.
6. It’s okay to take a day or 2 to yourself when you just don’t feel the inspiration/creativity.
7. Challenge yourself continually - that’s how you will grow personally and in your business. Learn something new or how to do something new.
8. Don’t forget why you do what you do. I do this to show my daughters they can do whatever they put their minds to.
9. Always be a servant leader. Serve others before yourself and it will come back tenfold.
10. It’s okay to want to throw the computer out of the window. We’ve all been there. It too shall pass.
11. Facebook is a necessary evil when working with small businesses.
12. Seek out opportunities to grow your network. Thanks to Mark Schaefer’s Uprising, my network has expanded GREATLY - they’ve become my work family. (right, • ??)
13. It’s okay to not win a client and it’s okay to lose a client.
14. Have fun and enjoy what you do, and don’t take yourself too seriously. 😁
I’m thankful for all of the support I’ve received from everyone - family, friends, and clients. I couldn’t do it without you guys and my faith!
Here’s looking forward to year 15! 🎉
